Spent my 38th birthday climbing Mount Fuji 🗻 We started from the Subashiri 5th station the day before on 17th July 2025, and hiked up to the 8th station to rest. The terrain changes as we ascend. In the beginning when we were still trekking through the forest it was rocky and bumpy and then changed to sandy and a little rocky. Somewhere from the 6th station onwards we were exposed to strong winds...

"As it was Golden Week and a sunny day, the parking lot was almost full.
It is empty outside of the peak season.
There are many views of Mt. Fuji and the Hakone area from the parking lot.
There were few people around near the mountain hut."

"Summer climbing season for Mt. Fuji
There are restrictions on private cars at the Subashiri entrance

There is a free parking lot next to the roadside station Subashiri, and buses depart from the free parking lot

The bus to the Subashiri entrance
The bus goes all the way up the side of the Self-Defense Forces' East Fuji Training Area and the US Marine Corps' East Fuji Training Area
The driver of the Fuji-Q climbing bus said that he retired from the Self-Defense Forces and now drives a climbing bus

At the 5th station is Ontake Shrine
The same is true at the 5th station of the Yoshida entrance
There is only Ontake Shrine at the 5th station
There is no Asama Shrine at the 5th station of either the Subashiri entrance or the Yoshida entrance

A souvenir shop is open at the Subashiri entrance during the climbing season.

Trailheads with private car restrictions for the entire Mt. Fuji and paid shuttle bus transfer parking lots.
① Fujinomiya entrance, paid parking lot
② Subashiri entrance, free parking lot
③ Fujiyoshida entrance, paid parking lot.

Due to the private car restrictions, the trailhead of Mt. Fuji is restricted to regular vehicles, so you park at the designated bus transfer parking lot near the trailhead and take a paid route bus to the trailhead.

No private car restrictions
④ Gotemba entrance
The Gotemba entrance starts from a low point, so there is little benefit to taking the bus, and it is a long-distance, long-distance climb, so it is more difficult than ①, ②, and ③, and the bus service is unprofitable because it attracts less than 5% of all Mt. Fuji visitors.

There is no private car restriction."

The road is a popular scenic drive, especially when it reopens after winter closures around late April. Drivers should be prepared for numerous hairpin turns and a steady climb. Reddit

While the drive is beautiful, it can be challenging. It's advisable to drive cautiously, especially if you're not accustomed to mountain roads. During the peak climbing season (July-September), private car access to the 5th station might be restricted, necessitating the use of a paid shuttle bus from designated parking areas. This is to manage congestion and ensure safety on the mountain. Reddit

Beyond the driving experience, the Fuji Azami Line serves as a gateway to the Subashiri trail, one of the less crowded routes to the summit of Mount Fuji. Even if you're not climbing, the drive offers a fantastic opportunity to experience the grandeur of Japan's most iconic peak from a lower elevation. TikTok

The Subashiri Trail Experience

The Subashiri 5th Station is the starting point for the Subashiri Trail, one of the five main routes to the summit of Mount Fuji. This trail is often considered less crowded than the popular Yoshida Trail, offering a more serene climbing experience. It's known for its distinct terrain changes as you ascend. TikTok

Initially, the Subashiri Trail takes you through a dense forest, characterized by rocky and sometimes bumpy paths. As you climb higher, the landscape transforms into a sandy and slightly rocky terrain, which can be more challenging to navigate. This variation in terrain makes the Subashiri Trail a unique and engaging hike for those seeking to conquer the iconic mountain. TikTok

Reaching the 5th station via the Fuji Azami Line allows visitors to experience the beginning of this famous trail and soak in the mountain atmosphere. For those planning to climb, it's essential to be well-prepared with appropriate gear, including sturdy hiking boots, layers of clothing, and plenty of water, as conditions can change rapidly.
