Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Takisan Toshogu Shrine for its dazzling, recently restored architecture and its status as one of Japan's three great Toshogu shrines. The opportunity to learn from shrine staff and admire the historical stone lanterns are also highlights. However, some visitors note that access to services like the shrine office is limited to weekends, and occasional ongoing restoration work might affect the full viewing experience.

"I visited Takiyama Toshogu Shrine, one of the three great Toshogu shrines, located about 4km east of Okazaki Daijuji Temple.
The three great Toshogu shrines are Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, and Takiyama Toshogu Shrine (there are various theories).
From the parking lot (free), climb the stairs to reach the shrine next to Takiyamaji Temple.
After approximately three years of repainting, I was able to see its magnificent decorations.
The shrine office is open at the entrance to the torii gate only on weekends, and here I received a pamphlet (100 yen), admission to the worship hall (100 yen), and a goshuin (regular seal) (500 yen).
The goshuin is written in advance.
The grounds are small, but dazzling and dignified, leaving you feeling refreshed.
Inside the worship hall, you can listen to a detailed explanation from the shrine staff."

"May 2024
It's located directly behind Takiyama-ji Temple.
It's said to be one of Japan's three great Toshogu shrines, along with Nikko and Kunozan.
When I first moved to Okazaki, my family told me this story, but I didn't believe it! (lol)

I visit shrines and temples in other prefectures, but I never really thought about it in my own city. This experience reminded me of the many historic buildings that Ieyasu has to offer.

Restoration work began in January 2022, and the main hall and inner gate were completed in September 2023, shining with vibrant colors and sparkling lights. The worship hall is still under construction, so I couldn't see it up close, but it was incredibly beautiful. The last restoration was apparently in 1971.

I wonder if this Toshogu also has a decoration with the chrysanthemum crest reversed somewhere, signifying that it's still incomplete?
I'd like to come back to see it once it's completed."

"☆ Northeast of Okazaki Castle = "Onmyou" (Demon's Gate) 😈
Birthplace of the divine lord Ieyasu, this shrine was built in 1646 (the third year of the Shoho era) by order of Tokugawa Iemitsu. Its worship hall, inner gate, and main hall are located one level higher than the main hall of Takiyama-ji Temple. These buildings are built in the vibrantly colored Toshogu-style. I learned for the first time that this is one of Japan's three Toshogu shrines, alongside those in Nikko and Kunozan. 🤔
There are numerous stone lanterns in the surrounding area, approximately 70 of which were donated by feudal lords from around Mikawa. The stone lanterns are engraved with the dates of the second to third years of the Shoho era.

☆ Five buildings of Takiyama Toshogu Shrine... Nationally designated Important Cultural Properties: Main hall, worship hall, inner gate, torii gate, and water house.

However, the main hall and inner gate are currently undergoing restoration and repair work, and entry is prohibited. Construction netting was installed, but we were able to worship in the worship hall.
The shrine is scheduled to be completed in 2024 (Reiwa 6), so we will return after that."
