What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about Minami-jima's unique karst landscape and the surreal beauty of its caved ponds, calling it a must-see Ogasawara experience. The adventurous landing and the chance to swim in pristine natural pools are highlights. However, access is highly weather-dependent, and the journey can be challenging, requiring advance booking for guided tours.
"Desert Island with valuable environment and fossils. Need guide to visit.

"Minamijima can only be reached on a guided tour. The landing route is narrow and lies at the end of a difficult rocky area, which is quite a feat! Just getting there is a fun, expedition-like experience, and tours are often organized in combination with attractions such as whale watching and dolphin swimming, making it a highly recommended addition to your Chichijima sightseeing tour.
Minamijima's isolation from Chichijima makes it an even more unique ecosystem. Its submerged karst topography, a rare formation found nowhere else in Japan, is home to numerous endemic species and a unique ecosystem. Add to that the breathtaking views of Sameike Pond and Ogiike Pond, and you'll definitely find this place in the top three tour experiences of my life."

"Visited in February 2022.
We scheduled the tour for the morning of our last day in Ogasawara.
Highly recommended.
This is a must-see.
Minamijima is famous for Ogiike Pond, but we were blown away by the beauty of Sameike Pond.
On the boat ride there, we saw Heart Rock, watched whales perform fluke-up dives and peck slaps, and were nervous as we entered Minamijima, trying not to hit any rocks.
On the way back, we were able to see John Beach and Ginny Beach on Chichijima, which are difficult to approach.
There is a daily limit on the number of people allowed on the island, but we think it is a necessary measure to protect this beautiful island."
