"There is 2 choices of transport when going to Sado Island, ferry or speed boat.
I got the first class cabin on the ferry to Sado and speed boat on the way back all online. Boarding is really easy, just by presenting the QR code I received via email.
The first class cabin reclining seat is surprisingly comfortable and not very rocky as it is still a ship. I managed to sleep for most of the trip.
There are drinks vending machine on the ship but not really sure about food are available.

"Where you go to buy tickets and board the car ferry or jet foil to Sado Island. We went the day before and bought round trip car ferry tickets in person or you can purchase tickets online via their website (available in Japanese and English). If buying tickets in person, just bring your car registration packet up to the counter and they will help you fill out the form and tell you the cost. There are multiple ferries to/from Sado Island each day. If traveling on a weekend or national holiday via car ferry best to book tickets online well in advance. We traveled to Sado on a Thursday and bought our roundtrip tickets on Wednesday. To get on the car ferry drive around the back of the building, show your ticket at the booth, and the agent will direct you to the lane to wait to board. We arrived at 8:30 AM for our 9:20 departure and had time to go inside and buy coffee/snacks at the terminal building convenience store and get an English map of Sado Island at the info center. We had to be back in our car and ready to drive on the ferry at 8:55 AM. On the boat the cheapest tickets are for a carpeted room you can sit or lie down in (take shoes off on carpet). Being a small travel pillow and/or a beach towel or small blanket if you want to rest. There is a small restaurant and vending machines, restrooms, an arcade game room, and a pet area on board the ferry. You can go up to the top deck on the stern too. It’s 2.5 hours via car ferry to Sado Island. If you take the 4:10 pm car ferry returning from Sado Island to Niigata City you should see the sun set over the water on your way back."

"The ferry terminal is very simply accessible from the nice parking lot via a sky bridge. The terminal itself is very clean and has a convenience store to grab snacks and beverages prior to any of the vessels departing the dock. The ticket counter workers are very friendly and helpful and the restrooms are very clean."
