🇯🇵IS THIS ONLY IN JAPAN? Today, I’d like to introduce something you need to do before entering a shrine or temple in Japan: “Temizu” (purification ritual). Before meeting the gods or your ancestors, you need to cleanse your hands and mouth. Don’t worry—it’s not because your hands or mouth are dirty! Here’s how to do it: 1. Wash your right hand. 2. Wash your left hand. 3. Take a small sip of wa...

⛩️ 🙇🏻‍♀️ how to pray at a Japanese Shinto shrine Visiting Shinto shrines (Jinja) is one of my favorite things to do in Japan, and the odds are you’ll visit a lot of them while here!!! Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Hannyaji Temple for its beautiful, well-maintained gardens, especially during the peak seasons for hydrangeas and cosmos. The peaceful atmosphere and intricate stone carvings are also frequently highlighted. Some note that the temple is not as grand as larger counterparts but offers a serene experience, with convenient parking available.

"In spite of the weekday today, Nara deer Park was crowded with inbound tourers.
Hannya-ji temple is not so large scale compared with, let's say, Todai-ji temple, motor parking place was well maintained to accept enough if it is not holiday.
As for cosmos flowers, yes, all of them are at thier best now!
Shooting location, position and angle was acceptable to spend 1 to 2 hours, worth visiting.
Basically, Nara city has not flashiness and liveliness compared with Kyoto, instead of calm and quiet atmospheric surroundings."

"I love to go here every year. Now they have a much larger carpark (shame they cut down some massive cherry trees to make it)"

Understanding Japanese Temple Etiquette

Visiting a Japanese temple like Hannyaji involves understanding and respecting local customs. A key practice before entering is the Temizu ritual, a purification rite performed at a water basin. This involves rinsing your hands and mouth to cleanse yourself spiritually before approaching the sacred space. Remember to use the ladle to pour water over your left hand, then your right, then pour water into your cupped left hand to rinse your mouth (spitting the water beside the basin, not back into it), and finally rinse your left hand again. TikTok+1

Upon approaching the temple grounds, you'll often encounter a Torii gate. It's customary to bow respectfully as you pass through it, acknowledging the sacred nature of the space beyond. Furthermore, it's advised to avoid walking directly in the center of the main path leading to the temple, as this central path is traditionally reserved for the gods. Stepping to the side shows deference and respect. TikTok

These practices are not just about following rules; they are about showing reverence for the spiritual significance of the temple and its deities. By observing these customs, visitors can have a more meaningful and respectful experience, contributing to the tranquil atmosphere that Hannyaji Temple offers. TikTok
