Best Time for Hiking

Aim for late spring to early autumn for the best hiking conditions. Avoid winter unless you're an experienced mountaineer, as snow and ice can make trails treacherous. Early mornings are ideal to beat crowds and enjoy clearer views.

Trail Preparedness

Sturdy hiking shoes are a must due to the muddy and rocky terrain. While some routes are well-marked, carrying a map or using a navigation app is wise. Be aware of potential landslides on access roads, especially after heavy rain.

Reviews Summary

Mount Ena is a well-regarded hike among Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, praised for its accessibility and rewarding autumn scenery. While summit views are limited, the journey through forests and the historical significance of the mountain are highlights. Some visitors note challenging terrain and the need for good preparation.

"Mount Ena / Ena-san on 30th October - 2191m at the summit with 1241m climbing and 4 1/2 hours hiking the 11.2km or so along the trail. This was completed with a very full and heavy 75 litre backpack. I started at the Hirogawara trailhead car park to the East of the summit. After crossing the river there is 1 very obvious trail to the top. There are a few places that need a little care but I saw 1 child around 10 years old and people 60 + years old. It's achievable for everyone in good health and with sturdy hiking shoes. It's a mixture of mud and rock on most of the trail. The viewpoints are limited by the thick forest. The road to the car park has frequent landslides with large rocks around the road. At 6am on a Sunday the car park was also very full. Parking is free but get there early. Toilets located in the car park, 1 male and 1 female. The route also has no shelters etc. Ena-san is a good hike and definitely worth a visit. So far no ice or snow so it's very accessible."

"You can't go further than Enasan Shrine. Due to construction, it's a rare haunted spot. I went to Kisokoma Reisui Park in the middle of the night, and both left wheels of my car fell into a gutter due to some yokai. I had to call a tow truck. It's a truly haunted spot. It didn't happen to me, but I'm sure there will be retaliation. And the locals take great care of it. Don't forget."

"November 15th, Sunny
When I looked it up, I found quite a few disappointing results on the 100 Famous Mountains list, so honestly, I didn't have high expectations, but I was able to enjoy some amazing views from some spots.
It was autumn foliage season, so the red-brown mountains were a beautiful sight, and I enjoyed the views from the open areas while climbing. This might be the perfect time to visit this mountain.
It was a little chilly when we started climbing, but the weather was beautiful and sunny, and the sunlight felt a little hot. Once we got into the shade and the breeze started, it was a little chilly.
I didn't think there would be many people there, but perhaps because it was a holiday and the weather was nice, there were quite a few climbers. This might really be the perfect time to visit this mountain."

Hiking Routes and Terrain

Mount Ena offers several climbing routes, with the Hirogawara and Maemiya trailheads being popular starting points. The Hirogawara course is known for its direct ascent, taking about 4.5 hours to reach the summit. The Maemiya route, on the other hand, is described as more extreme with a higher percentage of climbing, potentially taking longer. Both routes involve a mix of mud and rock, requiring sturdy hiking shoes. While generally well-marked, caution is advised, especially around river crossings on the Maemiya trail. Reddit

Reviewers note that the trails can be challenging, with significant elevation gain. The terrain is not always forgiving, and some sections require careful footing. Despite the lack of extensive panoramic views from the summit itself, the journey through the forests and occasional open areas provides a rewarding experience, particularly during the vibrant autumn foliage season. Reddit

For those who value scenery along the way, the Kamisaka Pass route on the Nagano side is recommended over the Maemiya route. Mount Ena is also recognized for its floral diversity, being part of the 'new 100 famous flowers' list, adding another layer of natural beauty to explore. Reddit

Best Times to Visit and Crowd Levels

Consequently, during this peak season and on sunny holidays, expect medium to high crowd levels at the trailheads and on the popular routes. Reddit

Winter hiking is possible but is generally reserved for experienced mountaineers due to the presence of ice and snow, making the trails significantly more hazardous. For those seeking a quieter experience, visiting on a weekday outside of the autumn peak season would be ideal. Reddit
