"August 3, 2025 Visit
Nagaoka Fireworks Festival, Niigata Prefecture
Visited during the Nagaoka Fireworks Festival
I heard it was the best fireworks festival in Japan, so I booked a tour and watched from the paid viewing area on the bank a short distance from Ote-Ohashi Bridge.
It was the most moving fireworks festival I've ever seen. 💕
Each program was unique and wonderful.
The Phoenix Show in particular was incredibly powerful, with its accompanying background music. The barrage of fireworks and the explosions made it even more moving. My heart was beating so fast I was moved to tears.
However, it was a 30-40 minute walk from the bus parking lot, and even when I arrived at the venue's embankment, there was still a wait of about an hour.
It was tough in the scorching summer sun.
The paid viewing area was clean and tidy, with restrooms and a concession stand nearby.
The volunteers were friendly, and there were large trash cans available.
The smoking area was spacious, covered, and well-ventilated.
I traveled all the way to Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, by Shinkansen and bus, and this fireworks display was truly worth seeing.
I'd like to come again next year."

"This is one of the bridges over the Shinano River that flows through Nagaoka City on National Route 351, which connects JR Nagaoka Station to Sakai-Nishi Intersection on National Route 8.
At night, when you look at Chosei Bridge, which is one bridge south of this bridge, the railings of the bridge are illuminated, making it very beautiful."

The Nagaoka Fireworks Festival Experience
Attending the festival requires significant planning. It's crucial to book accommodations and tickets months in advance due to high demand. Be prepared for large crowds and factor in considerable travel time to and from the venue, as walking from parking or bus drop-off points can take 30-40 minutes. The scorching summer sun can make waiting in line challenging, so bringing water and sun protection is essential.
Despite the crowds, the festival organizers strive to provide a comfortable experience. Paid viewing areas are typically well-maintained, offering access to restrooms and concessions. Volunteers are often praised for their friendliness, and ample trash cans are provided. The festival's scale and emotional impact make it a truly unforgettable event for many, with visitors often expressing a desire to return.
Navigating the Bridge: From Festival Chaos to Winter Serenity
This congestion can be particularly challenging for elderly visitors or those with mobility issues. One reviewer recounted assisting an elderly woman who had fallen hard on the bridge, highlighting concerns about safety and the responsiveness of authorities during peak times. The experience can be overwhelming, leading some to feel unsafe or frustrated by the behavior of others.
Conversely, the bridge offers a peaceful retreat during quieter times, particularly in winter. Visitors express a desire to walk the bridge in the 'comfortable silence' of winter, suggesting a completely different, tranquil atmosphere. This duality underscores the importance of considering the timing of your visit to best appreciate the Ote Ohashi Bridge's different facets.
