"May 15, 2025
I parked my car in the parking lot of the Shizugatake lift and climbed the mountain without using the lift. It took me 50 minutes to go there and 35 minutes to go back. The trail is well-maintained so that you can climb gently. I went out to the lift drop-off point and climbed again for about 15 minutes. According to a woman I met at the peak, it was a gentle climb from the Lake Yogo side, and it took about an hour to climb up.
From the peak, you can see a magnificent view of Lake Biwa and Lake Yogo."

Navigating the Ascent: Hike vs. Lift
Alternatively, the Shizugatake lift provides a more convenient and quicker ascent, especially for those who prefer to conserve energy or are not keen on strenuous activity. While the lift has a fee, it significantly reduces the travel time to the upper reaches of the mountain. Regardless of your choice, comfortable footwear is essential, as even the lift drop-off point requires some walking to reach the very peak.
Travelers often recommend checking the lift's operating hours, as they can vary seasonally. The choice between hiking and the lift ultimately depends on your fitness level, time constraints, and personal preference for experiencing the mountain.
The Breathtaking Summit Views
Many visitors express their awe at the sheer beauty visible from such a modest elevation. The combination of the two lakes, one a vast expanse and the other a more intimate body of water, offers a unique perspective. This makes Mount Shizugatake a highly recommended spot for photography enthusiasts and anyone seeking a moment of natural splendor.
To make the most of these views, consider visiting during the spring for fresh greenery or autumn for vibrant foliage. The quality of the view can also be enhanced by the time of day, with early mornings and late afternoons often providing softer light and fewer crowds.
