Established in 1869 by the Morioka Domain Governor, Toshikatsu Nanbu, to honor Metoki Takanoshin and Nakajima Genzo, both loyalists to the emperor at the time.
Later, the shrine enshrines war dead from various wars, and to date, it houses over 35,700 war dead.
Originally built in the Higashinakano Village area of what was then Iwate County, it was moved to Uchimaru Park in 1881.
It was later moved to the grounds of Hachimangu Shrine in 1906. Following the expansion of the shrine grounds in 1939, a new shrine was built on the current site.
Surrounding the shrine are several memorial tablets and a statue of a special attack troop.
