What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Ogami Island is a unique, sacred destination praised for its stunning natural beauty, from panoramic views to abundant butterflies and marine life. Visitors appreciate its untouched, mystical atmosphere and the chance to snorkel with sea turtles. However, the limited amenities, including only one restaurant and no gear rentals, require thorough preparation.
"An island that has declined in population, but by the looks of it, the butterflies have multiplied in multitude beyond anything I have ever seen. If you walk up to the observation deck, you will be rewarded with a 360 degree panorama of the small island. Coming back down, take a right hand turn to where you will find a rock, with million sea shells littered below it. Whether they are the left overs of years of locals eating sea shells or the work of Hermit crabs, which use the place to trade shells as they get to big for their old ones.
I also spotted a very large coconut crab in one of the trees, resting or waiting for something.
A very beautiful place."

"~A hidden island where only those who are called can go and stare blankly at the beautiful sea~
Ogami Island is about 15 minutes away by small ferry from Shimajiri Port, located north of Miyako Island, which runs four times a day. I heard that this island is known as a sacred place and a power spot, and that only those who are chosen or called by God can go to this island. The view from the observation deck in the center of the island and the road that surrounds half of the island is so beautiful and captivating. If you do nothing and just stare blankly, your heart will be revealed.
It is also popular for snorkeling, as there are coral reefs in the surrounding area and sea turtles can be seen frequently. There is no place to rent snorkeling equipment on the island, so you will need to bring your own, and there is an additional fee to bring it in. There are no lifeguards, so safety precautions are also necessary.
There is only one restaurant on the island, but it is a good idea to bring drinks, snacks, towels, etc. with you.
There is also a sacred place called Mitake on the island, and an area that is off-limits. When visiting the island, it is important to greet Mitake and follow the island's rules.
If you have the opportunity, please visit Ogami Island. It's a place I would like to visit again. Thank you."

"The nature and the warmth of the island's people were so wonderful that it really wasn't a stretch to call it the island of Kaminoshima.
There were no roads to the north, but it felt like there was something there. I'd like to go, though..."
