What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Joetsu Kokusai Ski Resort is praised for its scenic beauty and good value, especially through package deals. However, many visitors note that the ski lifts are slow and the resort layout can be inconvenient, requiring multiple connections. While suitable for beginners and intermediates, advanced skiers might find it less challenging.
"90% of the time spent on ski lifts than actually skiing. Not worth it. Our legs and knees hurt because none of the ski lifts have footrest like in Europe. If you’re gonna make people sit on ski lifts all day at least have footrest. Most of the ski lifts also don’t have safety bar. It’s a beautiful resort but it has the strangest layout where to get somewhere you need 2 even 3 connecting ski lifts. Worst part other than the non existent footrest is the fact that the ski lifts are extremely slow. Slowest ski lifts in the world. Better to ski somewhere else."

"We stayed three nights in January. The room is spacious but a bit old and required renovation. Dinner, bkf and lift pass are included. Food variety is limited (no sushi) but when considering the price, it is as expected. The major problem are the ski ground. There is insufficient signage to show direction, and you dont know what level of slope the liftchair will take you to. There are insufficient chairs for you to change boots. Three persons share one locker with only one key. Overall, the hotel is okay for the price charged but the ski facilities needs some improvement."

"Too many ski lifts, felt like a lift resort than a ski resort. Should be renamed to Joetsu Mendokusai. Have to pay for parking and also not many food options even though there are tons of resting cabins."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
A key consideration for families is the potential for slow ski lifts and the resort's layout, which might require extra planning to navigate with children. Ensure you have a clear understanding of the resort map and lift connections before you go. Also, be aware that lockers are often shared, so coordinating belongings among family members will be necessary. Despite these minor challenges, the scenic beauty and the overall value make it a worthwhile destination for a family ski holiday.
💰 Budget Travelers
Be prepared for the resort's unique characteristics, such as slower ski lifts and a layout that may require multiple connections. This means you might spend more time traveling between runs, but it also contributes to a potentially less rushed and more relaxed experience. Parking fees are also a factor to consider if you're driving. Overall, if you prioritize affordability and a comprehensive experience, Joetsu Kokusai offers a good balance of cost and winter fun.
🏂 Snowboarders
The resort's layout, which sometimes requires multiple lift connections, might also affect how efficiently snowboarders can explore different areas. While there isn't extensive mention of dedicated terrain parks beyond the halfpipe, the general slope conditions and the availability of package deals make it a viable option for snowboarders looking for an affordable and scenic winter getaway.

Understanding the Ski Lifts
The layout of the resort also contributes to the lift experience. To navigate between different sections, particularly from the front part to the more appealing hinterland, multiple connecting lifts are often required. This can add to the overall travel time between runs. While the sheer number of lifts might seem like a positive, the operational speed and the layout's efficiency are key considerations for skiers and snowboarders. Visitors who prioritize rapid access to varied terrain might find this aspect challenging.
Despite these criticisms, the resort's broad layout does provide beautiful views, and the hinterland areas are particularly praised for their scenery. For those who don't mind a more leisurely pace or are looking for a resort that emphasizes the journey as much as the destination, Joetsu Kokusai's lift system, while dated, is a defining characteristic. It's a good idea to study the resort map thoroughly before heading out to understand the most efficient routes.
Value and Accommodation
The dining experience, while not gourmet, is functional and meets expectations for the cost. Variety can be limited, with some guests noting the absence of certain popular items like sushi. However, the inclusion of dinner and breakfast in many packages simplifies meal planning and adds to the overall convenience. For travelers prioritizing affordability and a comprehensive package over luxury amenities, Joetsu Kokusai presents a compelling proposition.
It's important to balance the critiques of the ski facilities with the overall value offered. The resort provides a solid base for enjoying winter activities, especially for beginners and intermediates, and the scenic beauty of the surrounding area adds to the appeal. When considering a trip, looking for these bundled deals can significantly enhance the perceived value of the experience.
Suitability for Different Skiers
However, advanced skiers or those seeking challenging off-piste terrain might find the resort somewhat limited. The focus appears to be on providing accessible and enjoyable runs rather than extreme challenges. The slow lifts and the layout requiring multiple connections can also be a deterrent for expert skiers looking to maximize vertical descent and explore vast areas quickly. Therefore, managing expectations based on your skiing ability is crucial when planning a visit.
The resort's 'old school' charm, as described by some, means it retains a classic ski resort feel. While this might not appeal to everyone, it can offer a nostalgic and relaxed atmosphere. For those who value a scenic environment and a less crowded, more laid-back skiing experience, Joetsu Kokusai can be a rewarding choice, provided they are aware of its specific characteristics, such as the lift speed and layout.
