Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Kugino Highlands for its breathtaking views of Mount Aso and convenient amenities. The ample free parking, delicious local food options (especially the microwavable bento boxes), and pleasant garden areas make it a highly recommended stop. While there isn't much to 'do' beyond enjoying the scenery and shopping, it's considered a perfect, relaxing break on any journey through the Aso region.

"Date visited: late June 2025
Google map brought me to Mont Bell shop next to this rest area. It took me some extra time to figure out the rest area is just next to this Mont Bell shop - selling outdoor clothes and gears. The rest area consists of one grocery store and one self service restaurant. Nice view while eating there. The grocery shop sells lunchboxes and offered microwave to warm up so you can eat at the platform and enjoy the view. I chose to eat that small box of minced meat lunchbox and it turned out to be delicious. Another chose to eat at the restaurant. It has air conditioning.
It is free parking and ample spaces.
Nothing much to do there - just shop eat and watch. Can walk at the back of this building if you are interested to explore. Probably an easy one hour in this area."

"Asobo no Sato Kugino Roadside Station is located in Minamiaso area, Aso District of Kumamoto Prefecture. It is situated at the foot of the famous Mt Aso.

This is a roadside station where you can relax while enjoying the natural beauty of its surroundings. The view from the wooden deck is awesome. It’s a great place to dine and taste Aso’s local delicacies and seasonal fruits, vegetables, and meat.

Asobo no Sato Kugino Roadside Station a pretty large free parking area which can cater t approximately 150 regular cars and 20 more for large-sized vehicles, and bikes.

It is just a little bit more than an hour drive from Kumamoto Station."

"The two statues in front of this rest stop (a huge akage wagyu and its little calf trailing behind) are quite eye-catching.

You can have a cup of coffee or a soft ice cream while enjoying the lovely view of the Aso mountain range in the distance. There are also some shops where you can check out the souvenirs and local produce."
