What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Umekoji Park is praised as a spacious, clean, and peaceful green space in Kyoto, offering a welcome respite from the city bustle. Visitors appreciate its well-maintained facilities, playgrounds, and proximity to the Railway Museum and Aquarium, making it ideal for families and relaxation. However, the summer heat can be intense, and a minor issue with vending machines and damp money has been noted.
"Umekoji Park is a beautiful and relaxing spot in Kyoto. The park is very spacious with lots of green areas, walking paths, and open lawns where you can picnic or just enjoy the scenery. It’s clean, well-maintained, and not as crowded as some of the more famous tourist spots, which makes it perfect for a quiet break.
There’s a lovely Japanese garden inside (small entrance fee), a big playground for kids, and even the Kyoto Railway Museum and Aquarium nearby, so it’s a great place for families. In spring, the cherry blossoms here are stunning, and in autumn the colors are beautiful too.
Overall, a peaceful park with something for everyone – whether you want to relax, exercise, or explore with kids. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Kyoto."

"This park is one of the best public spots in Kyoto! Well-maintained, clean, and super spacious — perfect for running, walking, or just relaxing under the trees. 👍 Facilities are great, and there are also several vending machines around the park which is very convenient after exercise.
⚠️ Just a little tip: be careful when buying drinks from the vending machines right after running. If your money is slightly wet or damp, the machine might swallow your bill without giving you the drink or the money back. I personally experienced this with a 1000 yen bill, and even with help from a kind local, the machine didn’t return my money. This might apply to other vending machines in Japan too, so make sure your bills are dry before use.
☀️ Since it’s summer, the heat can be quite intense, so the park may look less crowded. Best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when it’s cooler and more comfortable.
⭐ Rating: 5/5
✅ Pros: excellent public facilities, clean, green, peaceful, vending machines available
❌ Cons: very hot in summer, vending machines don’t work well with damp money"

"Lovely little park with pretty corners. A wee pond, with a heron, visiting ducks, healthy pigeons. Lovely wild flower garden. Nice little haven away from the city. Families, elderly, school groups. Peaceful."
