Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Togetsukyo Bridge for its stunning natural scenery, especially the mountain and river views, and its historical significance. The opportunity to rent kimonos adds a unique cultural element. However, many note that the area, particularly the bridge and bamboo grove, can become extremely crowded, detracting from the experience.

"This bridge should be on your walking path in this area. When you cross the river to the other side you get to see stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

The bridge links the residential/commercial area near the main train station with the touristy area with cute little shops and the monkey park.

This is how the river looked in early April. You can see cherry trees on the mountains and a few very nice ones in this area.

The bridge sidewalk is very small on both sides so it gets really crowded here around noon. Best to walk through this area in the morning, the only thing is most shops don’t open until around 11AM and that’s when it gets busy."

"Extremely crowded area this time of year. However, when you're on the bridge, it really is a beautiful site of the lake and mountains. There were boats taking customers around and other what appeared to be private boats. The water level at the bridge wasn't deep and was able to see fish and turtles."

"Togetsukyo Bridge (渡月橋)is a 155-meter bridge built across the Katsura River, which flows through Saga Arashiyama , a well-known place of scenic beauty in the western hills of Kyoto. The artistic form of the bridge embodies the aesthetic sense that is at the heart of the Japan artistic tradition. The name Togetsu, meaning moon crossing, stems from a tale involving the Kamakura period Emperor Kameyama. During a boating party under a full moon, the emperor thought the moon looked like it was crossing the bridge. The first bridge here was built in 836, while the current one was finished in 1934. Although the bridge appears to be made of wood, its columns and beams are reinforced concrete, and only the parapets are made from cypress. There are a number of souvenir shops next to the bridge. Rickshaws shuttle back and forth, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a bygone era of Japan.
The bridge is accessible by train.
Take the JR Sagano Line from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama Station. Alternatively, you can take the Keifuku Arashiyama Main Line to Arashiyama Station. The bridge is a one-minute walk."

Navigating Arashiyama's Crowds

Arashiyama, particularly the Togetsukyo Bridge and Bamboo Grove, is a major tourist hotspot. To make the most of your visit, early morning is key. Many travelers recommend arriving before 9 AM to experience the Bamboo Grove with significantly fewer people. Reddit+1 This allows for a more serene and immersive experience, with better opportunities for photography. The shops and many attractions open later, so you can explore the natural beauty first and then enjoy the commercial side as it comes alive.

Consider your itinerary carefully if you're trying to fit in multiple Arashiyama sights. Some Reddit users suggest prioritizing Tenryu-ji Temple's garden, which is expansive and can feel less crowded than the Bamboo Grove even with many visitors. Reddit If you're short on time, focus on the bridge, the bamboo path, and perhaps one key temple. Remember that Arashiyama is quite spread out, so factor in walking time between locations. Reddit

For a unique perspective, a boat cruise on the Katsura River offers a tranquil escape from the foot traffic. This allows you to appreciate the natural scenery and the iconic bridge from a different vantage point. Reddit

The Togetsukyo Bridge: History and Significance

The Togetsukyo Bridge, meaning 'Moon Crossing Bridge,' is a historic landmark in Arashiyama, Kyoto. The current structure, completed in 1934, is built with reinforced concrete for its core but features traditional cypress wood for its parapets, blending modern durability with classic aesthetics. Reddit Its name originates from a tale where Emperor Kameyama, during a moonlit boating party, observed the moon appearing to cross the bridge, inspiring its poetic moniker. The bridge has a venerable history, with the first iteration dating back to 836 AD. Reddit

Beyond its historical significance, the bridge is a central point for experiencing the natural beauty of Arashiyama. It spans the Katsura River, offering picturesque views of the surrounding mountains, which are particularly stunning during the spring cherry blossom season and the vibrant autumn foliage. Reddit The river itself is shallow enough in parts to see fish and turtles, adding to the scenic charm. The area around the bridge is a hub for local shops and rickshaw services, evoking a sense of old Japan. Reddit

Interestingly, in 2005, a hydro-power station was built along the river, utilizing the Katsura River's flow to generate electricity for the bridge's evening illumination. Reddit This modern integration ensures the bridge remains a beautifully lit spectacle as the sun sets, complementing its ancient charm.
