Kushiro City Zoo offers a chance to see a variety of animals, including popular species like Amur tigers and brown bears, with some visitors appreciating the close encounters and family-friendly rides. However, a significant number of reviews express concern over the small size of enclosures and the apparent stress of the animals, leading to a mixed overall impression.
"We visited on October 14, 2025. The weather was very nice. We didn't expect much coz we just wanted to see the brown bears up close but it was good. We saw the bears playing with each other about 4-5 meters away. We saw many owls which we couldn't find in the wild during our trip. We saw many other kinds of animal. And by surprise we did see "Shimaenaga" right after we exited the zoo!!! (Photos of the owl and the bear were retouched to replace the background)"

"Really sad place. These animals are kept in tiny cages. They are depressed. The zoo needs to transfer the animals to sanctuaries and conservation areas. They don’t deserve to live like this for our entertainment and for the zoo to make money. Please, don’t support by visiting."
Katya
"Disappointed..animals in the zoo sparse place are badly maintained
Not really worth visiting"

Visitor Experiences and Welfare Concerns
However, a recurring theme in reviews is the concern over the size and condition of animal enclosures. Several visitors describe the cages as 'tiny,' 'sad,' and 'unadapted,' leading to observations of animals appearing 'depressed,' 'sick,' and 'stressed.' Specific mentions include the polar bear, brown bear, tigers, and giraffes displaying signs of distress. Some reviewers strongly advocate for transferring animals to sanctuaries and express disappointment with the perceived lack of adequate care.
This disparity in experiences suggests that while the zoo offers opportunities to view various animals, potential visitors should be aware of these welfare concerns. It's advisable to research the zoo's current practices and consider supporting conservation efforts if animal welfare is a primary concern.
