Reviews Summary

Kusatsu Tropical Wonderland offers a unique experience with its dome recreating a tropical climate using hot springs, featuring diverse animals and plants. Visitors enjoy close animal encounters and the novelty of the environment, though some express concerns about the aging facilities and animal welfare conditions. Reddit+2

"I’m not sure how to feel about this place. It’s definitely interesting, and an inspired use of the natural hot springs in Kusatsu. The animals in the zoo are a unique and diverse bunch, and I enjoyed seeing them. You’re even allowed to touch some of them unsupervised (not sure how great this is for animal welfare, but what do I know)!
The building itself is curious, and certainly unique. I don’t know if it’s just the nature of concrete to blacken and spoil, and I’m sure the humid air from the hot springs doesn’t provide the perfect environment for maintaining steel and glass, but the whole place had a slightly grotty/falling apart feel to it. It felt like I stumbled into an abandoned tropical research station!
As much as I had fun, I hope the animals are being treated well. I’m giving this place a tentative 5 stars, but let’s just say I wouldn’t be surprised if this place closed down for any number of reasons."

"Mixed feelings- having just seen many of the same species in the San Diego zoo- exciting to get so incredibly close but heartbreaking to see such deprived housing. Reviews say its like a prison. Prepare for Incredibly hot inside. Price was 1300 a person. Conditions are dirty too. Im still recovering from seeing an owl in a small birdcage."

"Inhumane. How can an animal be happy in an aquarium with nothing inside. Don’t recommend this place."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Unique Dome Environment

Kusatsu Tropical Wonderland stands out due to its innovative use of the region's abundant hot springs. The entire park is housed within one of Japan's largest domes, creating a self-contained tropical ecosystem. This allows visitors to experience a warm, humid climate with lush vegetation and exotic animals, regardless of the cold mountain weather outside. The constant heat and humidity are a direct result of the geothermal energy harnessed from the local hot springs, making it a truly unique attraction. Instagram

This ingenious design creates a stark contrast to the surrounding snowy landscapes of Kusatsu during winter, offering a surprising escape. The dome's construction and maintenance, however, have led to some observations about its aging appearance. Some visitors note a 'grotty' or 'falling apart' feel, possibly due to the challenging humid environment on the structure itself. Reddit

Despite the aesthetic concerns, the dome successfully sustains a variety of tropical plants, including banana trees, orchids, and carnivorous plants, alongside its animal inhabitants. It's a testament to the engineering and the unique geothermal resources of Kusatsu. Instagram

Animal Encounters and Welfare Considerations

A significant draw of Kusatsu Tropical Wonderland is the opportunity for close encounters with its animal residents. Visitors can observe a diverse range of species, including reptiles, various small mammals, and birds. Instagram+2 The park offers supervised feeding sessions and even allows guests to touch some of the animals, creating memorable interactive experiences. InstagramReddit

However, these close interactions have also sparked discussions regarding animal welfare. Some reviews express concern over the housing conditions, describing them as 'deprived' or akin to 'prison.' Specific examples include an owl in a small birdcage. Reddit+1 While staff are noted for their politeness and efforts in providing detailed descriptions and drawings about the animals, the overall conditions have led to mixed feelings among visitors. Reddit

It's important for potential visitors to be aware of these differing perspectives. While the interactive nature is a highlight for many, others find the animal enclosures to be a cause for concern. This duality is a recurring theme in visitor feedback, making it a point of consideration for those planning a visit. Reddit+2
