"Absolutely breathtaking, and a true highlight of our 2023 Japan trip!
A hidden getaway that's only accessible by train then 20-minute mountain hike! But it's well-worth it, because you have this gorgeous onsen in the middle of lush mountainous forest along with home-cooked traditional Japanese meals.
This is where you want to go if you want to bathe naked in a boiling geothermal onsen while it's 2 degrees outside. A unique experience, alongside lovely staff and accommodations. (We were even lucky enough to see a lot of wild snow monkeys!!)
It's a little antithetical to the vibe of the place, but I can confirm our pocket WiFi had reception out here."

"Most incredible isolated onsen with guest rooms. Have to take gorge railway to get there, then hike 20 mins. Totally stunning outdoor and indoor onsens (mixed and separate). Tatami lined rooms overlooking roaring river with chirping birds. Delicious meal, attentive service. Peaceful sleep to the sound of the roaring river."
Max Thomas
"A beautiful location. We only used the onsen, a glorious setting in the gorge, great to soak in to water in such splendid scenery. The 600m walk from the station was a nice way to start and end the visit. (No road or other access so far as we could see)"
