What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Kumamoto City Zoological and Botanical Gardens is a highly affordable and pleasant destination, praised for its clean grounds and variety of animals and plants. Visitors appreciate the picnic-friendly atmosphere and scenic views, though some express concerns about the size and upkeep of animal enclosures, suggesting potential improvements for animal welfare.
"It is a nice place, it looks clean and well kept. It's also very cheap so you can visit it on a random day. There's a little theme park inside where kids can enjoy themselves. You can also bring your own food inside, but if you don't, there's a small cafe inside where you can buy snacks and even rice meals. I enjoyed the monorail ride.. and walking around is not tiring since there's a lot of trees, and places where you could sit and rest. I recommend this for a family trip, a school trip or even a quick date."

"Kumamoto City Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a pleasant destination for families, couples, and nature lovers. It combines a mid-sized zoo with a botanical garden, making it an enjoyable half-day outing.
🐅 Zoo Highlights
The zoo houses a variety of animals—lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes, monkeys, and native Japanese species. Enclosures are smaller compared to larger, modern zoos, but the staff clearly care for the animals. Kids especially love the petting area and small rides inside the park.
🌿 Botanical Gardens
The botanical garden section features seasonal flowers, a greenhouse, and landscaped walking paths. In spring, cherry blossoms make it a perfect picnic spot. There are also shaded areas for resting.
🏔 Scenic Bonus
From some parts of the park, you can enjoy a view of Mt. Aso on clear days, adding a unique Kumamoto touch to your visit.

"I genuinely love the place, so please don’t get me wrong. But I do feel that the living conditions for some of the animals really need improvement.
When I visited this zoo, I was heartbroken by how small and poorly maintained the enclosures were — the lions were roaring nonstop, and their space was extremely limited. All the animals look sad, the bears, the polar bears, the lions and tigers, the monkeys.. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind paying a higher entrance fee if it meant giving these animals a more comfortable, enriching environment to live in."
