"Lovely quiet shrine, expansive grounds and parking available. Seems dedicated to those who went to war and didn’t come back. Thought-provoking on many levels."

"Simple Shinto shrine...nice spot when cherry trees are flowering"

Gordon Bartley

"I decided to visit Gokoku Shrines across the country, and decided to drop by. There are two Gokoku Shrines in Hyogo Prefecture, and before my first morning visit, I waited in the parking lot until 9:00 when the shrine office opened. As you'd expect in Kobe, many women in kimonos came, perhaps for a tea party. There are also many Inari shrines and memorial monuments, so please come and visit. Thank you very much."

History and Resilience

Hyogo Prefectural Gokoku Shrine has a significant history rooted in remembrance and resilience. Originally built in 1940 to commemorate heroes, it was designated a Gokoku Shrine in 1941. Tragically, the original building was destroyed in the Great Kobe Air Raid of 1945. Reddit

Following World War II, it was temporarily renamed Hyogo Goryo Shrine to avoid closure due to its militaristic association. After Japan regained sovereignty, it was renamed back to its original title in 1952 and rebuilt in 1959. The shrine faced further challenges with the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995, which caused damage. However, it was rebuilt again in 1996, demonstrating the community's dedication to preserving its memory. Reddit

Today, it enshrines 53,257 war dead from eastern Hyogo Prefecture, serving as a poignant reminder of the past and a symbol of enduring spirit. The shrine's history is a testament to its importance in the local community and its ability to overcome adversity. Reddit
