Reviews Summary

Kaminoko Pond is praised for its stunning, clear cobalt blue water and the unique sight of preserved fallen trees. Visitors appreciate its serene atmosphere and fewer crowds compared to other blue ponds. However, some find the journey on the bumpy gravel road and the lack of facilities a minor inconvenience.

"Nestled deep in the forests of eastern Hokkaido, Kaminoko Pond—literally ‘Pond of God’s Child’—is famous for its enchanting cobalt blue color. Fed by pure spring water from Lake Mashu, the pond never freezes, and fallen trees remain beautifully preserved beneath its crystal-clear surface. Many visitors describe it as a place where time stands still.
It’ll take 30 minutes drive from Nakashibetsu town."

Ken T.

"A peaceful and serene alternative to the more famous Blue pond in Biei. Barely anyone there when we went. The water is crystal blue and there were small fish in the pond. Very beautiful."

Calvin Chen

"Wow, this is much more wonderful than the popular blue lake in Hokkaido (having been there previously). This lake is out of the way for most but a worthy stop if you will like to observe an active blue lake fueled by thousands of litres of daily underground water still bursting through it's center at 8 degrees Celsius throughout the year. This is why it's blue and the tree falls at its centre ain't rotting due to the cold water.

If you observe closely, many small fishes actually reside at the mouth of the water flow.

It is however a small lake and there's a path built surrounding it so that you can view it from all angles.

The gravel road isn't that challenging and doable in all types of cars (if you have driven much in Japan's countryside, this is nothing too out of the norm)."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Mystical Blue of Kaminoko Pond

Kaminoko Pond, translating to 'Pond of God's Child,' earns its name from its breathtakingly clear and vibrant cobalt blue water. This unique color is a direct result of the pure, cold spring water that continuously flows from the nearby Lake Mashu, renowned for its exceptional transparency. The water temperature remains a constant 8°C (46°F) year-round, which is crucial to the pond's distinct characteristics. InstagramReddit+1

This constant influx of cold, mineral-rich water not only maintains the pond's striking blue hue but also prevents it from freezing, even in Hokkaido's harsh winters. The clarity is so profound that visitors can see the bottom of the pond, where ancient fallen trees lie preserved, appearing almost as if they were recently placed there. This surreal sight, combined with the vivid blue, creates an otherworldly and tranquil atmosphere that captivates visitors. InstagramReddit

Navigating to Kaminoko Pond

Reaching Kaminoko Pond requires a bit of an adventure, as it's nestled away from major routes. The final approach involves a 2-kilometer stretch of gravel road leading to a small parking area. While many visitors report successfully navigating this road in standard vehicles, it's advisable to drive cautiously due to its bumpy nature and the potential for tire punctures, especially during the summer months when insects are abundant. Reddit

It's important to note that there are no restroom facilities available at the pond itself. Therefore, visitors should plan their needs accordingly before embarking on the final leg of their journey. The walk from the parking area to the pond is short and pleasant, primarily along a well-maintained boardwalk, making the destination accessible once you arrive. InstagramReddit
