What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the beautiful drive through the woods and the profound spiritual energy felt at the ruins of the old Kirishima Shrine. While some hiking options are limited due to volcanic activity, the scenic nature and historical significance make it a worthwhile destination. The Visitor Center's lack of English information is a minor drawback for international travelers.
"I loved this place. The drive up there, for one, is wonderful, on a winding road going through the woods. The ruins of the original Kirishima Jingu at the foot of the mountain mark the starting point of the hike, and they really make you feel the sacred energy of the place."

"Great spot for a hike. The drive up the mountain was also fun!"

"WARNING! Hiking to Nakadake and Shinmoedake is not allowed due to volcanic activity as of 2011! Sucks, I know. But I love the feeling of this place, despite the limited activities. Walking up to the ancient Kirishima Shrine (destroyed in the 13th century) is a must. I've hiked up to Takachiho Nomine and that's arduous and awesome. And there is a Nature Trail loop with various extensions that is nice. The Visitor Center has some good displays on the topography and birds, but no english, so that's limiting."
