Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate Kawazu Hama Beach for its natural beauty, especially during the vibrant Kawazu cherry blossom season. The beach offers unique opportunities for photography, beachcombing, and enjoying peaceful sunrises. However, some note that it's not ideal for swimming and can accumulate natural debris.

"Not a swimming beach but i enjoyed my time dipping my feet there. There are quite a lot of items getting washed up Shore including junk, seaweed, wood shreds, shells, dead sea lives, Corals, etc... can go on a treasure hunt and you may find something you like"

Luke L'sk

"After a leisurely 3-kilometer-walk of enjoying the cherry blossoms along the Kawazu River, we reached Kawazuhama Beach where the breakwater offshore ensures a peaceful beach with gently lapping waves.

Kawazuhama Beach (Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan), is not well known, which helps keeps the crowds to a minimum. The beach itself is not that big, but offers a chance to take some nice sunrise photos or maybe even have a barbecue during summer.

Although driving to the beach offers opportunities to see more of the local area (162 km southwest of Tokyo), you can easily reach the beach within a 6-minute walk of Kawazu Station on the JR Izukyuko Line."

Daisei Iketani

"I went here the first week of march and so many people are here. They enjoy the Kawazu zakura and then enjoy lunch at the beach. Saw many family bring their picnic basket and mat and enjoy the sun and breeze at the beach while enjoying lunch and the kids run around playing with water. The scenery is okay. The water is blue but it is not a white sand. I hope people (especially foreigners) are more conscious about leaving trash in here since the cleaning staff looks so tired picking up trash. Anyway a great place and deffinitely want to visit here again!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Kawazu Cherry Blossom Phenomenon

Kawazu Hama Beach gains significant popularity during the Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival, typically held from late February to early March. This festival celebrates the Kawazu zakura, an early-blooming cherry blossom variety known for its vibrant pink hue and longer blooming period compared to other types. The blossoms line the Kawazu River, creating a picturesque pathway leading to the beach, and many visitors enjoy a leisurely walk or bike ride along this scenic route before reaching the coast. Reddit

During this peak season, the area transforms into a lively hub with numerous food stalls, local vendors, and a festive atmosphere. While the blossoms are the main draw, the beach itself offers a different kind of beauty. The breakwater offshore ensures that the waves are gentle, making it a peaceful spot to relax and enjoy the seaside. However, it's crucial to note that this period also attracts large crowds, so planning and booking accommodations well in advance is highly recommended. Reddit

Exploring Kawazu Hama Beach: Beyond the Blossoms

While the cherry blossoms are a major draw, Kawazu Hama Beach offers its own unique charm throughout the year. Unlike pristine white-sand beaches, this stretch of coastline is characterized by a more natural, rugged beauty. You'll find an abundance of driftwood, a variety of sea shells, and sometimes interesting sea life washed ashore, making it a fantastic spot for beachcombing and a natural treasure hunt. Reddit

The beach is also a popular location for sunrise photography, with the offshore breakwater providing a striking foreground element against the dawn sky. On clear days, the Izu Islands are visible in the distance, adding to the scenic panorama. For those seeking a more active experience, the beach is suitable for playing soccer, and during the summer months, it's a designated area for barbecues, offering a unique seaside dining experience. Reddit

It's important to manage expectations regarding swimming. While the water is clear and warm, the seabed can be uneven and contain natural debris. Therefore, it's best enjoyed for wading, dipping your feet, or simply appreciating the coastal views rather than for extensive swimming. The presence of shower rooms and restrooms adds to the convenience for visitors. Reddit
