Reviews Summary

Marunuma Kogen is praised for its long ski season and wide, beginner-friendly runs, offering a less crowded experience. However, the lift system, particularly the reliance on a single gondola with an early closing time, is a notable drawback for some visitors.

"the park is open for such a long time from november till may!! and gondola is so good takes you right up to the top of the mountain. it has many different courses for all difficulty types. very fun the slide down from the top over and over again. would recommend"

Tomoya Kumita

"Not too far from Tokyo and not that small. Their lift system though might need revamping as they only have one gondola/ropeway that takes you to the top that takes a good 10minutes plus. There doesn't seem to be many lifts mid-mountain level that takes you back up so once you go down, the only way to get back up is via the time consuming ropeway which also shuts at 3pm, leaving the top out of bounds. Mountain isn't that high so was pretty good visibility throughout the day. Some really good long runs which makes the place interesting but you can soon get bored. The runs are long and wide so not as challenging but still fun. Snow quality is so-so, normal resort/groomed quality and didn't see much powder. Still they have a large variety of very long runs so taking different routes can provide enough variety for a day's fun. Does seem to be more geared for experienced snowboarders as they have several park areas. No problem but some of the snowboarders seems to have less consideration for others doing tricks, failing and then falling all over the place causing a nuisance to everyone. They also have a foot spa at the top but was frozen at the time."

Navigating the Lifts and Slopes

Marunuma Kogen's lift system is primarily centered around a single, scenic gondola that transports visitors directly to the summit. This 10-minute ride offers impressive views but can be a bottleneck, especially as it's the main route back up from higher elevations.Reddit Unlike some larger resorts, there's a noticeable lack of mid-mountain lifts, meaning once you descend a run, your primary option to regain altitude is the time-consuming gondola. This is compounded by the gondola's operational cut-off at 3 PM, effectively limiting access to the upper mountain in the late afternoon.Reddit

The slopes themselves are a highlight, characterized by their width and length. This makes Marunuma Kogen an excellent choice for those who enjoy long, cruising runs and practicing their technique. While this can mean less challenging terrain for advanced skiers and snowboarders, it provides ample opportunity for varied routes and enjoyable descents throughout the day.Reddit The resort also caters to snowboarders with dedicated park areas featuring various obstacles and jumps.Reddit

Beyond the Slopes: Summer Activities

While Marunuma Kogen is renowned as a ski resort, its operational season extends beyond winter, offering a range of summer activities. Visitors can engage in camping, climbing, and hiking, taking advantage of the mountain's natural beauty in warmer months. The gondola, which serves as a ski lift in winter, likely provides access to hiking trails and scenic viewpoints during the summer, making it a versatile destination throughout the year.

This dual-season appeal means Marunuma Kogen isn't just a winter sports destination. Its location in Katashina village, known for its natural landscapes, suggests opportunities for exploring the surrounding Gunma prefecture. The presence of a foot spa at the summit, even if frozen during a winter visit, hints at a focus on relaxation and enjoying the mountain environment, which can be equally appealing in summer.
