"Legend has it that Tsurugiike Pond was built during the reign of Emperor Ojin (the 15th emperor). It was later expanded and is now called Ishikawaike Pond. However, if you look closely at the surface of the pond, you can see concrete stakes protruding from the surface, which are said to mark the boundary. (The area within the stakes is Ishikawaike Pond, an expanded version of the outer area of Tsurugiike Pond.) On the north side of the pond stands a monument bearing a poem by Princess Ki. She was the daughter of Emperor Tenmu and the wife of Emperor Mommu, but may have been stripped of her status after having an affair with Prince Yuge (although there is no official record of this).
