What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Karatsu-yaki Pottery Studio for its authentic craftsmanship, serene atmosphere, and the welcoming nature of the potter. The opportunity to purchase unique pieces directly from the artist and the charming presence of studio cats are frequently highlighted as memorable aspects of the visit. Some minor points of consideration include navigating the narrow access path and confirming opening hours.
"I stopped by at 1:30 PM on May 2, 2024. I called ahead to confirm they were open at that time. There's a slightly narrow path from the main road to the workshop, so please proceed with caution. The entrance is surprisingly easy to find; once you find the sign and gatepost, enter. There's a parking space below the workshop large enough for 3-4 standard passenger cars, so I parked there and headed inside.
Nakazato Hanako's works were on full display (for direct sale). You could carefully pick up plates and mugs. This time, I came across some beautiful Ao Karatsu plates. I was so happy.
While peeking into the kiln area in the back and the workshop with the potter's wheel, the cashier said, "You're welcome to take a look. The teacher will be here too." As I continued to the back, admiring the pieces drying, the teacher's pet cat scurried out. A white, free-spirited creature (lol).
A lovely, smiling woman appeared, following the cat. It was Ikuhanako-sensei with both hands full of clay! I was so touched.
She spoke candidly about her works and the exhibition at Yoyokaku in Karatsu. All the while, her hands were constantly twisting out plates and measuring their sizes with a ruler, a display of craftsmanship that was captivating.
Nakazato-sensei's workshop was filled with lush greenery, beautifully blooming flowers, and the lovely buzzing of insects and birds' wings. I'm sure you'll grow to love monohanako's works, which combine traditional Karatsu ware with American and European influences, even more through interacting with the teacher and staff. Oh, and the free-spirited workshop cats were lovely too. I hope you'll stop by and take a peek."

"I love the design and ease of drinking from the bamboo mug, so I use it with the blue jean and white ones. I'm planning to get other tableware as well!"
