Reviews Summary

Visitors find Suzuka Pass a challenging yet rewarding hike, offering a genuine glimpse into the historic Tokaido. The steep ascent is a significant undertaking, but the sense of accomplishment and the quiet, historical atmosphere are highly appreciated. Some note the lack of crowds as a positive, preserving its tranquil charm.

"On May 3, 2025, I arrived at the top of Suzuka Pass, panting. I left Sekijuku at 8:30 AM and arrived at 12:00 PM, walking at a leisurely pace.
It's said to be the second most difficult pass after Hakone, but the toughest part was the last 500 meters or so. Sayo no Nakayama was much tougher.
Reading several guidebooks, it seems the definition of a "difficult pass" in mountain climbing isn't the slope, but the number of bandits. While Hakone Pass was apparently riddled with bandits, Suzuka Pass was no less daunting, so much so that Sakanoue no Tamuramaro was ordered by the emperor to hunt them down. In my experience, the ranking of steep and difficult passes is as follows: Hakone Pass, Sayo no Nakayama, and Suzuka Pass.
From Suzuka Pass to Tsuchiyama, there's a seemingly endless, gentle downhill slope."

"In 886, the Tokaido opened the "Asuwa Road" over Suzuka Pass. From that point on, people crossed the river near Mikumo and traveled southeast along the Yasu River to Suzuka. ("History of Shiga Prefecture," p. 84)

When approaching Suzuka Pass from the Mie Prefecture side, there are stone steps along the national highway, making it impossible to traverse it directly by bicycle. People have to carry or push their bicycles up the pass. From the Shiga Prefecture side, it's possible to cycle directly to the pass."

"I came up from Sekijuku. It was a Saturday, but I didn't see anyone. I could hear the sound of cars passing by on National Route 1, but it was a quiet place where time passed slowly. I don't think it's a typical tourist spot, so I hope it stays like this forever."
