Reviews Summary

Kamaishi Station is recognized for its historical significance as a gateway to the 'Town of Iron, Fish, and Rugby,' with its connection to the scenic Sanriku Railway Rias Line being a major draw. However, the lack of elevators is a significant drawback for travelers with luggage or mobility concerns, and the immediate area can feel somewhat desolate with limited dining options.

"Very nice station. The only inconvenience is if you have large luggage or old people traveling with you, there is no elevator at this station, you have to carry your luggage up and down the stairs by yourself. Kindly hope this facility can be improved."

Sophie Chang

"The station is served by JR East's Kamaishi Line and Sanriku Railway's Rias Line. JR East's Kamaishi Line terminates at this station, and Sanriku Railway's Minami Rias Line is also officially registered at this station, marking the end of the station and the starting point of the Rias Line. The JR station is nicknamed "La Oceano" (the Ocean) in Esperanto, while the Sanriku Railway station is nicknamed "The Town of Iron, Fish, and Rugby."
In 2002, the station was selected as one of the 100 Best Train Stations in Tohoku, as "a station building that has contributed to the history of Japan's iron industry as the gateway to the town of iron.""

"This station on the JR Kamaishi Line and the Sanriku Railway Rias Line has a local train station feel, but it's not particularly rural. It doesn't feel particularly prosperous, either. Right in front of the station is a Nippon Steel factory. I also visited the market facility called Sunfish Kamaishi, but it still had a desolate feel to it. There's nothing particularly interesting nearby, and most restaurants are closed. Despite that, the Kamaishi ramen at Sobadokoro Kamaishi, located next to the station, is excellent and highly recommended. The wrapped train that stops on the siding from the platform is also a highlight for train enthusiasts."
