It is said that the temple was founded when Chiba Jitan, a military commander who had influence in Boso, moved from Ichikawa in Chiba Prefecture to Akatsuka Castle in 1456, and then in 1492, he designated the old temple Hojiji, which was located there, as his own family temple, donated the land, and had it renamed Shogetsu-in.

During the Edo period, the temple was recognized by Tokugawa Ieyasu and was given 40 koku of red seal land. It was also protected by other successive shoguns and developed.

The temple was selected as one of the "New Eight Famous Places of Tokyo" by the Hochi Shimbun newspaper, and the grounds are quiet, but there is a kindergarten next door, so I wonder if it gets lively when the children are there? The grounds are beautifully maintained and the trees are neatly arranged."
