"Such a beautiful stalactite cave, worth visiting if you have spare time. It is around 3km long, and is the 7th longest stalactite cave in Japan. The stalactite looks even better in real life than on photo.

They also showcased coconut crab and butterfly womb. Before you leave, check out the nice souvenir shop.

I rented a bike and rode 30min to reach the cave."

"Went on my own and is a must visit. Caught the Bus no. 8 from the Port Bus Terminal. Took about 15 minutes on the bus and then walk about 10 minutes. Not complicated to go at all on your own. It took about to 30 minutes to walk through the cave leisurely and is comparable to the Stalactite Cave in Valencia with the exception of the in Cave pond in Valencia. The only thing is make sure you finish the visit and get back to the bus stop by 2:00 pm because the no. 8 bus back to the port bus station runs only twice a day. If you finished early, and want to catch the bus back but you want to eat something, no problem. The return bus station is right by Ikkyu Restaurant."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Geological Marvel: The Formation of Ishigaki Limestone Cave

The Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave is a testament to nature's artistry, formed over an estimated 200,000 years. This massive natural cavern is a result of karst topography, where soluble rocks like limestone are slowly dissolved by rainwater. Over eons, this process creates underground passages and chambers, adorned with spectacular stalactites (hanging from the ceiling) and stalagmites (rising from the floor).

The cave's unique location in Okinawa, Japan's southernmost limestone cave, contributes to its distinct formations. The rapid growth rate of stalactites, approximately 1mm every 3 years, is notable. This geological activity has sculpted imaginative rock formations that have captivated visitors, with some resembling animals, mythical figures, and even beloved characters. Instagram+1

Unlike many caves, the Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave boasts a rare feature: it opens directly onto the sea, a phenomenon that adds to its allure. This connection to the ocean influences the cave's environment and adds a unique dimension to its exploration. Instagram

While the main cave offers a significant walking path, there's also a nearby, free-access cave known as the Ryujin Limestone Cave (Dragon God Cave). This smaller cave offers a more natural, unlit experience, providing a different perspective on the island's geological wonders. Instagram
