What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Urakuen Garden and Jo-an is praised for its beautiful, well-maintained traditional landscaping and the serene atmosphere of the Jo-an tearoom. Visitors appreciate the peacefulness and the cultural insights offered, especially by the tea experience. However, some find the entrance fee high without discounts and note that the 'wow factor' might be less pronounced for those not deeply interested in tea culture or history.
"Lots of people seem to come here with discount coupons for staying at the hotel across or with public transport discount tickets. For those of us less fortunate, the full entrance price is 1200 yen per person. And another surcharge if you'd want to enjoy tea inside their tea room. On top of that, the lady at the ticket counter spent 10 minutes talking to two Japanese ladies in front of us, pretty much giving them a private tour while we waited in line along with a bunch of others behind us. Frustrating, especially if you have to pay an exorbitant amount to visit.
Anyway... The garden, the grounds, and the buildings are nicely maintained. They breathe peacefulness into your body and soul as you stroll around. Some buildings have their doors open, so you can take a glimpse inside. We spent a good half hour walking around, taking pictures and enjoying the tranquility."

"Even though it is a 'national treasure' class of tourism spot, it doesn't have the wow factor for average oversea visitors. Seems like if you are into the tea culture and history, you will appreciate it. It is a little overrated for me."

"One of the three best Japanese Gardens. A very nice place with a very helpful staff. It is incredibly beautiful and full of tea houses and all things pertaining to a traditional Japanese garden."

The Serenity of Japanese Gardens
Key elements include the use of natural materials, the careful pruning of trees to create specific shapes, and the integration of water features like ponds and streams. The goal is to create a balanced and aesthetically pleasing environment that changes with the seasons. The presence of tea houses, like the renowned Jo-an, further emphasizes the garden's role as a space for quiet reflection and cultural appreciation.
For those seeking a deeper understanding, researching the principles of Japanese garden design can enhance the experience. Understanding the symbolism behind different elements, such as the placement of stones or the types of plants used, can unlock new layers of appreciation for the artistry and philosophy embedded within the landscape.
The Art of the Japanese Tea Ceremony
Visitors who opt for the tea experience can expect to witness or participate in a carefully choreographed ritual. This often involves the preparation and serving of matcha (powdered green tea) and sometimes a small sweet. The focus is on the present moment, the interaction between host and guest, and the appreciation of the utensils and the surroundings. It's a chance to step away from the everyday and engage in a moment of refined simplicity.
While the full cultural nuances of Chanoyu can take years to master, experiencing it at a place like Jo-an offers a valuable introduction. It provides a tangible connection to centuries of tradition and a moment of calm reflection. Even if you don't partake in the tea service, admiring the architecture of the tearoom itself is a worthwhile experience, as it's considered a national treasure.
