Reviews Summary

Iyo Kokubun-ji Temple offers a peaceful stop, particularly for Shikoku Pilgrimage participants seeking a Henro stamp. While the temple grounds are appreciated for their quiet and serene atmosphere, some visitors have reported disappointing interactions with temple staff regarding the stamp collection process. However, other visitors have found the monks to be helpful and accommodating. Reddit

"I don't like leaving negative reviews however, I was quite disappointed by one of the monks who gave me my stamp as a henro.

He barely looked at me, completed my stamp with little care and tossed my book back at me, with the book cover open and pages askew.

Didn't say a single thing to me.

I had to set my pages back and fix my book when I left the temple, I have never been treated so rudely by any of the temple staff before.

I think someone else should be providing the stamps as this monk as I think he doesn't want to be there and he is representing the temple poorly"

"Conceptually, I have an issue with “reviewing” a Temple or a Shrine or any other spiritual site. Our world is overran by ratings and reviews, and here, a Temple, offers us an alternative, which is clearly lost in comparisons and ratings. So I rate them all Five Stars if you care to look up at the starry skies.
I was hoping to find lodging recommendations near Kokubunji Temple in these Google reviews when I noticed several negative remarks about the monk who works in the office. I believe we carry the baggage of our own life and we tend to reflect it on to others … I had a very pleasant experience with this monk. He courteously stamped my notebook and did his calligraphy. Afterwards, I asked a favor if he could call a taxi for me, which he graciously did and kindly pointed me to the spot down in the parking where the taxi would meet me. Oh wondrous!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Shikoku Pilgrimage (Henro)

Iyo Kokubun-ji Temple is one of the 88 temples on the sacred Shikoku Pilgrimage, known as the 'Henro'. This ancient journey is undertaken by pilgrims seeking spiritual enlightenment and merit. For many, visiting each temple to receive a unique stamp and calligraphy in their pilgrimage book (nōkyōchō) is a central part of the experience. The stamps serve as proof of visit and are often meticulously collected. Reddit

While the pilgrimage is a deeply spiritual practice, the interactions at each temple, particularly with the monks who provide the stamps, can significantly shape a pilgrim's experience. Reviews suggest that while some monks are courteous and helpful, others may appear indifferent or even rude. This variability is a common theme among pilgrims and is important to be aware of when planning your visit. Reddit

If you are undertaking the Henro, approaching each temple with an open mind and a spirit of acceptance is key. Remember that the pilgrimage is as much about the internal journey as it is about the external stops. The stamps are a tangible reminder of your progress, but the spiritual lessons learned along the way are invaluable. Reddit

Navigating Temple Etiquette

When visiting Iyo Kokubun-ji Temple, or any temple in Japan, maintaining respectful behavior is paramount. This includes dressing modestly, speaking softly, and refraining from loud conversations or disruptive actions. If you are collecting a Henro stamp, approach the office calmly and wait your turn. Reddit

Some visitors have noted that the monks are busy with their duties, which may include calligraphy and other temple tasks. While a friendly greeting is always appreciated, understand that their primary focus is on their spiritual responsibilities. If you need assistance, such as asking for directions or help with transportation, do so politely. One reviewer shared a positive experience where a monk graciously called a taxi and provided directions. Reddit

It's also worth noting that temples are places of worship. Even if your primary goal is to collect a stamp, take a moment to appreciate the sacredness of the environment. A simple bow or a moment of quiet reflection can show your respect for the spiritual significance of the site. Reddit
