Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Ichikawa City Archaeological Museum for its impressive whale skeleton and comprehensive exhibits covering a vast historical timeline, all offered with free admission and parking. While some find the museum quiet and perhaps a bit dated, its educational value and accessibility make it a recommended stop, especially when combined with the adjacent History Museum.

"Leaving the Ichikawa History Museum, I walked up a curving hill to the Ichikawa Archaeological Museum. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who thought, "Oh no!" after I noticed a parking space right in front of the entrance. (laughs)

I stopped for a moment to look at the gray whale in the entrance hall, imagining that it must have actually been swimming around here during the Jomon Sea Level Rise. Seeing the real thing in person is the real thrill, after all.

Ichikawa has clearly been a popular residential area since the pre-Pottery Period, and considering Kokubunji Temple and its ties to the Yamato government, it must have been quite prosperous.

The only regret is that I didn't see a single person during my leisurely hour-long tour... I'm sure you've had a lot of trouble with budgetary constraints and other issues, but I hope you'll enjoy the renovation and attract many visitors."

There are plenty of exhibits from the Paleolithic period onwards. The diorama recreating the Jomon period has a slightly retro feel to it, which is nice!"

"Admission is free, and parking is free too, but the exhibits are very comprehensive. I was surprised to learn that in ancient times, Chiba was once the sea, and once the land."

This connection to the sea is a recurring theme, showcasing Ichikawa's evolution from a coastal region to its current inland status. Reddit

Understanding this geological history provides crucial context for the artifacts unearthed.
