Reviews Summary
Shonan Star Mall truly shines during its major festivals, offering dazzling Tanabata decorations and energetic Yosakoi dance performances that create a vibrant atmosphere. While many enjoy the family-friendly activities and the spectacle, some visitors note that the street can feel lonely and have fewer open shops outside of festival times, and food stall availability can be inconsistent.
"Shonan Star Mall will be the street performance venue (nagashi odori) for the 18th Shonan Yosakoi Festival 2023. The performances of 44 participating teams started at 11:30 on Sunday, June 4th. The weather was good, and the excitement of both dancers and spectators was palpable as the nagashi odori was a long time coming.
At the stage performance venue (fixed-point odori) at Mitsukedai Park Lawn Square, the performance started at 11:20, so you can see one team performing twice, with different times.
This time, we only watched one nagashi odori, but the Yosakoi dance unfolding across the 400m long Shonan Star Mall was moving, with big smiles and dynamic performances! !"

"This is the main street of the nationwide Hiratsuka Tanabata Festival. The flashy and huge Tanabata decorations are a must-see! This is the only festival that Hiratsuka can be proud of nationwide! It gets pretty rough at night, so it's best to leave early."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The Hiratsuka Tanabata Festival
Beyond the visual feast, the festival atmosphere is electric. While the mall itself is the main stage for the decorations, the surrounding areas often feature food stalls, local crafts, and other entertainment. Visitors can immerse themselves in the festive spirit, enjoying the sights, sounds, and tastes of this beloved summer tradition. It's a time when the entire city of Hiratsuka comes alive, celebrating this ancient Japanese festival with modern flair.
Shonan Yosakoi Festival
The performances are characterized by powerful movements, vibrant costumes, and enthusiastic music, often accompanied by the rhythmic clanging of 'naruko' (wooden clappers). Spectators can feel the passion and dedication of the dancers as they fill the street with their performances. It's a fantastic opportunity to witness a lively and modern interpretation of Japanese folk dance, offering a different but equally exciting cultural experience compared to the Tanabata Festival.
Navigating Festivals and Crowds
For those attending in the evening, be aware that the atmosphere can shift. While exciting, some reviews mention it can get 'pretty rough' at night, suggesting a more boisterous crowd. It's advisable to keep valuables secure and be mindful of your surroundings. If you prefer a calmer experience, visiting on a weekday or outside of festival dates is recommended, though the street will be much less vibrant.
