What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors generally praise the Hikone Moat Boat Tour for its scenic beauty and the unique experience of visiting Chikubu Island. The convenience of English signage and the helpfulness of port staff are frequently highlighted. However, some find the boat ride noisy, and the extensive stairs on the island can be challenging for some.
"This ferry travels from Hikone to Chikubu Island and Takeshima Island. They even have English signs and timetables for non-Japanese speakers. I was able to buy a ticket without any problems, even though my Japanese is pretty bad. The boat ride was fine, but it was a bit noisy. You may want to bring headphones or something similar."

"Great boat trip to Chikubushima Island. Nice way to see the lake and it's islands. We had 70 minutes to explore Chikubushima. Many shrines; great views; lots of steps!
The boat had an information guide playing inside with the history and mythology of the island, Hikone and surrounding the area.
The Red boat was very comfortable, clean and spacious."

"We walked there from Hikone Castle and it was a long walk, so I recommend you take the shuttle bus from Hikone Station and then catch a cab to Hikone Castle. The port people are more than happy to help you call a cab when you return to port after your cruise. There are male and female toilets (Japanese aka squatting style), a few vending machines and of course the ticket office.
The cruise itself was quite smooth and adventurous people can even ride at the top for a splashing good time. Make sure your hat and phone are firmly attached to your person though because they will fly off due to the strong winds and boat movement. Alternatively you can chill in the comfortable area below and watch the sea pass by as you approach the 'island of the gods'.
The island itself looks intimidating up front coz of all the stairs but if you slowly climb up to all the temples, you will be greeted with a gorgeous view and beautiful architecture. You might want to bring a mozzie patch in case you are a mozzie magnet. The time you are allocated is only 70 minutes so make sure you get back in time to board the board or you will be left behind. Also good to note your boat or you might get on the wrong one! Although you have to show your ticket so it's likely you will be prevented from boarding anyway if it's not the right boat.
All in all a peasant adventure I'd recommend for a trip while you are at Hikone!"

Navigating the Hikone Moat Boat Tour
Getting to the port is made easier by a complimentary shuttle bus service that runs between Hikone Station and the ferry terminal. This is a significant convenience for visitors relying on public transport. Alternatively, taxis are readily available for a more direct route. The port itself is equipped with basic amenities, including restrooms and vending machines, and the staff are helpful in assisting with return taxi arrangements. The boat experience can be quite lively, with some passengers opting for the open-air top deck for a more adventurous ride, though this comes with the caveat of strong winds and potential for getting splashed. For a more relaxed journey, the comfortable indoor seating area provides a pleasant way to watch the scenery glide by.
Exploring Chikubu Island
The climb, while potentially strenuous, rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Biwa and the surrounding landscape. The island's architecture is beautiful, and the spiritual atmosphere is palpable. It's recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes and to pace yourself to fully appreciate the experience. Some travelers suggest bringing mosquito repellent, especially during warmer months, as they can be a nuisance.
It's crucial to be mindful of the time allocated for your visit. Missing your return boat can lead to significant delays. Ensure you know your boat's departure time and return to the dock promptly. Also, pay attention to which boat is yours, as there might be multiple ferries departing around the same time, though ticket checks usually prevent boarding the wrong one.
