Reviews Summary

Visitors find Hiji Castle Ruins to be a unique and scenic historical site, particularly appreciating the well-preserved stone walls and the stunning views of Beppu Bay. The integration of the ruins with an active elementary school is a standout feature, offering a fascinating blend of past and present. While the castle itself is gone, the historical remnants and coastal scenery make it a worthwhile stop for those interested in Japanese history and unique cultural juxtapositions.

"One of my favorite things about Japan is how the old (sometimes really old) and new coexist, and are respected. These castle ruins and elementary school is a prime example. First off it's beautiful. Right on the water, Oita in the distance, super scenic. But for me, that it's on the elementary school grounds (a middle school is right next door) is such a cool blend, so unique. The school kids have it so nice here, their respect for the ruins is apparent. 2023"

"The castle is no longer there. However, there was an elementary school and the stairs are still intact. Quite interesting to see if you are into Japanese historical building."

"It's a small but very interesting castle by the sea.
It's now been turned into a primary and junior high school, so we were only able to look around outside the stone walls, which doesn't appear to be part of the school grounds."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Hinode Castle

Hinode Castle, also known as Badani Castle, was a modern-style flatland castle constructed on a low plateau overlooking Beppu Bay. Its construction began in August 1601 under Engo, who entered Hiji and, with shogunate permission, initiated the castle's building. The castle was largely completed by August of the following year. It was designed with a central Honmaru, surrounded by Ninomaru, Sannomaru, and outer enclosures, all separated by moats and secured with castle gates. The Kinoshita family, who were feudal lords with ties to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, played a significant role in its history. Reddit

After the establishment of the Niwa-naoki Prefecture in 871, the castle's buildings were gradually demolished, with only the Onimon-sama and Somon-bashi bridges remaining. Today, the site is famously integrated with an elementary school, offering a unique perspective on how historical sites can coexist with modern life. Visitors can still appreciate the neatly stacked stone walls and imagine the castle's former strategic importance overlooking the bay. Reddit
