What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the breathtaking beauty of the wisteria trellis, describing it as a truly magical and healing experience. The temple grounds offer a serene atmosphere, further enhanced by the exceptional kindness and hospitality of the local community. While the wisteria season is a major draw, the temple's peaceful ambiance is appreciated year-round.
"The temple and grounds seem fairly typical, but the vast wisteria trellis is completely breathtaking, if the season is right. In 2019, went on April 23 and it was a touch before the peak, but still sublime. Extremely recommended. If it’s a warmer than usual spring, best to go in late April and not May (could be withered).
Everyone there was so friendly and tried to help me and my friend in English (and some kind strangers gave us some sweet wisteria senbei). Also visit the nearby Sakichi Daibutsu if you stop here— there is great English signage telling a cool story."

"At the beginning of May, I visited the Shinshu Otaniha Takehana Betsuin as part of the route for the mystery-solving event. It is a historic temple located in the quiet streets of Hashima City, and as soon as I stepped inside the temple grounds, I was enveloped in a calm atmosphere and a sense of calm.
It is easily accessible within walking distance from the nearest station, so it is a great place to drop in on a stroll around town. Although I visited for the event, I was surprised to encounter beautiful seasonal scenery, which was a soothing moment for me.
It is a temple that seems to show different faces depending on the season, so I would like to stop by again if I have the opportunity."

The Enchantment of Wisteria
To truly appreciate the wisteria, timing is crucial. While late April is often ideal, a warmer spring can mean the blooms appear earlier. Conversely, visiting too late in May might mean catching the tail end of the season, with flowers potentially withered. The annual Wisteria Festival amplifies the experience with a lively atmosphere, complete with food trucks and local vendors, though it also means larger crowds.
Even outside of its peak blooming period, the temple grounds themselves offer a tranquil escape. The serene environment and the architectural beauty of the temple provide a peaceful setting for reflection and appreciation of Japanese temple culture.
Community Spirit and Local Charm
This sense of community extends to shared experiences. During the wisteria season, you might encounter strangers offering sweet treats, like the 'wisteria senbei' mentioned by one visitor, or simply sharing in the collective awe of the blooming flowers. This shared appreciation fosters a positive and memorable atmosphere. The ease of access from the nearest station also contributes to the relaxed vibe, encouraging visitors to take their time and soak in the local charm.
Exploring Beyond the Temple
Hashima City itself, where the temple is located, offers a quiet and pleasant environment for exploration. The temple's accessibility from the local station makes it an easy place to 'drop in on a stroll around town.' This makes Yanaizu Betsuin an ideal component of a broader exploration of the region, combining natural beauty with historical and cultural discovery.
