What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Guests consistently praise Fujiya Hotel Hakone for its exceptional historical charm, beautiful grounds, and top-notch service, making it a standout favorite for many. While the pricing of extras can be high and some beds are noted as firm, the overall experience of stepping back in time and enjoying the serene onsen is overwhelmingly positive.
"We had a lovely stay at the Fujiya Hotel! This was the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. The grounds of the hotel are gorgeous. We loved the views from the breakfast room in the main dining hall. The onsen spa was amazing. Our room was very spacious and the service was top notch. The hotel is easily accessible from the bus stops in town. There were cute antique shops surrounding the hotel. This was everyone’s favorite hotel from our 2 week trip to Japan! We will be back one day."

"Staying at Fujiya Hotel in Hakone was a truly special experience. This historic property is beautifully restored, full of charm and character, and offers a rare opportunity to connect with Japan’s rich hospitality heritage. It genuinely feels like stepping back in time—in the best possible way.
Service throughout our stay was excellent—definitely a 5-star experience. We had breakfast once in the stunning, historic Fujiya dining room and it was absolutely worth it. We also had dinner at Cascade, which was nice, though there was a small language mix-up (I asked if the duck course was duck breast and was told yes—but ended up being served the fish instead). It made for a funny memory during an otherwise lovely meal.
The onsen was a highlight—tranquil, beautifully designed, and with peaceful views of the surrounding mountains. We also really appreciated the hotel's collection of historical artifacts. One of the coolest parts was seeing original restaurant menus going back to the late 1800s and old guest logbooks. It gave me a real sense of connection to the long legacy of the hotel—it’s rare to feel that kind of personal tie to a place.
The location is also excellent. It's right along the Hakone Golden Route, with bus stops just outside the entrance. We used the Hakone Free Pass and found it incredibly easy to get around. The staff gave us a helpful printed map showing local routes and tips, which made exploring stress-free.
If there’s one downside, it’s the pricing of certain extras. For example, a small bowl of mixed nuts at the bar was ¥1,100, and two coffees with cake came to ¥6,000. Given the already premium room rates, it would be a thoughtful gesture if small bar snacks like nuts were complimentary with drinks for hotel residents.
Still, Fujiya Hotel is truly one of a kind. If you appreciate history, tradition, and top-notch service, this is a memorable and meaningful place to stay in Hakone."

"This is a beautiful hotel set in stunning grounds. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The rooms are beautifully appointed and you can bathe in the hot spring water in the privacy of your own bathroom if you choose not to use the onsen . The only criticism is the hardness of the beds, they were very uncomfortable."
