"The best way to come here is by Resort Shirakami. Good luck to getting seats on this train in Summer! The mini-bar with its sake selection is a must try (cheaper than the coffee). Mini-bar doubles as a souvenir shop - get towels, books, clothing about the region.
You must get a reserved seat, but there is no restriction on picking a safe spot to stand and watch the scenery outside, so we were not all disappointed when we couldn't get ocean-view seats. Collected the stamps of the train as a good memoir.
