Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Seikado Bunko Art Museum for its valuable antique collections and well-curated exhibitions, often featuring national treasures. The historical Meiji Seimei Kan building adds to the charm. Some find photography restrictions on key items a drawback, and summer garden visits may require mosquito repellent.

"There are more than 6,000 pieces of valuable antique collections for each themed exhibition. And this time; the most precious item is Inaba Tenmoku tea bowl. Only 3 tea bowls in existence and one is here."

Sunshine Allen

"The private Meiji museum is newly reopened in early 2023. As a history and Japanese drama lover, I definitely pay a visit as its national treasure: 曜變天目碗 yohen tenmoku tea bowl is on their exhibition list again. This tea bowl is one of three lasting completed bowls with unique inner design, which is made in Song dynasty, in the world. Its inner design contains the eye-liked bubble drawing which occurs randomly when the handcraft man made it. Its exact manufacturing method is unknown. Some description says the former Samurai General loved appreciating it as it would reflect the universe.
The bowl is given by the 3rd Samurai General Tokugawa Iemitsu 德川家光 to his nanny 春日局Lady Kasuga who had swore not to take any medicines to protect the General in return. Then, the General gave his nanny this precious bowl to encourage her to have medical treatment.
Another story said this tea bowl was originally owned by Lady Kasuga and gave to the Samurai General when she started serving the General. Later, Lady Kasuga helped the Samurai General to send the anger of the General to the royal family when the royal clan killed the son of Samurai General’s sister. This tea bowl was the gift appreciating her bravery. With these attractive historical stories, this tea bowl become more valuable and eye-catching.
The son of 春日局(稻葉 family) inherited this bowl at the end and cherished it for a long time.
There are also other art craft such as the amazing wooden Japanese dolls, the skilful craftsman would make the wooden sleeve of the doll liked flowing in the wind by creating the accurate angles of the clothing. It is worthy to spend 1-2 hours here.

Remember to get tickets online or come earlier to get the chips to buy the ticket on-site. There are small coin-locker inside, be prepared the 100 yens. The locker will return the coins back after your usage."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Significance of the Yohen Tenmoku Tea Bowl

The Yohen Tenmoku tea bowl is a centerpiece of many exhibitions at the Seikado Bunko Art Museum, and for good reason. This rare artifact, dating back to the Song dynasty in China, is one of only three known complete bowls of its kind in the world, with the other two also residing in Japan. Its defining feature is the unique, almost eye-like bubble drawing that appears randomly on its surface, a result of an unknown manufacturing process. This enigmatic beauty has captivated collectors and historians for centuries. Reddit

Its historical provenance is equally fascinating. Stories suggest it was gifted by the third Shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, to his nanny, Lady Kasuga, as a symbol of encouragement for her loyalty and well-being. This narrative adds a layer of human connection to the object, transforming it from a mere artifact into a vessel of historical anecdote. The bowl's journey through prominent families, including the Kasuga clan, further solidifies its status as a treasured piece of Japanese cultural heritage. Reddit

Due to its immense value and fragility, photography of the Yohen Tenmoku tea bowl is strictly prohibited. Visitors are encouraged to appreciate its unique glaze and historical significance through direct observation, understanding that its preservation is paramount. Reddit

Its grand facade and interior details reflect the era's prosperity and design sensibilities. The museum's relocation and reopening within this historic edifice in early 2023 marked a new chapter for the institution, allowing it to showcase its collections within a fittingly distinguished setting.
