Reviews Summary

Travelers find the Shin-Tomakomai East Port Ferry Terminal functional for its purpose but acknowledge its remote location and limited nearby amenities. While the ferries themselves are generally well-maintained and offer decent onboard facilities like baths, the lack of services at the terminal requires proactive planning for food and supplies. The journey is often described as scenic and relaxing, though connectivity issues are common.

"On my second road trip to Hokkaido, I boarded the Yukari ferry from Tomakomai back to Niigata. My fellow passengers had to walk from the terminal building, which was quite inconvenient. I booked a deluxe twin room a month in advance, taking advantage of an autumn travel discount, and it cost about 55,000 yen for my wife and me and our car. The area around the Tomakomai East Ferry Terminal is quite deserted, and the terminal building's shops are open according to the ferry's arrival and departure times, making it an inconvenient location. The Yukari ferry is about 20 years old, but it's well maintained and safe. On our way to Niigata, we made a port call in Akita (no disembarks). We arrived at the port around 7:30 AM. There were many windmills. I thought I saw a large ship following behind me, but it turned out to be the luxury cruise ship MSC Bellissima. It was my first time seeing one in person. I was surprised at its size—170,000 tons, about ten times the 18,000-ton Yukari ferry."

"This is the terminal for Shin Nihonkai Ferry, also known as the "Bosozoku of the Japan Sea" and "Dragstar of the Japan Sea."

Although it's called Tomakomai East Port, it's actually located in Atsuma Town, about 25km away from Tomakomai West Port, where ferries other than Shin Nihonkai Ferry depart and arrive, so it could be quite a hassle if you get confused.

Across from the terminal is Hokkaido Electric Power's Tomakomai Atsuma Power Station, which caused a complete blackout across Hokkaido in September 2018, but other than that, the terminal is located on the edge of the almost deserted Yufutsu Plains, and naturally there are no shops nearby, so it's best to do any shopping in Tomakomai city or around Mukawa before boarding.

The building is new and clean.

From here, direct ferries to Tsuruga (operating daily) depart and arrive, speeding at a whopping 50km/h on the sea despite being large ferries, as well as ferries to Niigata via Akita (operating only once a week (Saturday) to Tsuruga) (which runs at around 40km/h, which is normal for a large ferry)."

"I stayed in Tourist A's room during the Obon holiday in August 2025. Departed Tomakomai East at 11:30 PM and arrived in Tsuruga at 8:30 PM the next day.
Bicycle/original. Total cost ¥24,500.
Ferry name: Suinsen.
The boarding and disembarking order is by foot, car, bicycle, and motorcycle. Apparently, the boarding and disembarking order varies depending on the day.
It's a long voyage, so you can enjoy a leisurely journey. There's a large communal bath with sauna on board. There's also a mini shop.
The shop at the ferry terminal is more extensive. If you forget to buy souvenirs, I recommend the shop at the ferry terminal. There's a limited selection on board, but they do have souvenirs. They have Shiroi Koibito.
Smartphone reception is unstable or out of range at the time of departure and until around noon the next day.
I recommend downloading e-books so you can read them even when you're out of range.
Tourist A's private beds were always out of range.
There is a restaurant on board, but it is expensive, so we recommend bringing your own food. However, please note that there are no convenience stores near the terminal. In fact, there is nothing near the terminal. The nearest station, Hama-Atsuma Station, is a secluded station. It is a 20-minute walk.
The structure of the ferries Suinsen and Suzuran is the same."

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Traveling with children via Shin-Tomakomai East Port Ferry Terminal requires careful planning due to the terminal's remote location and limited facilities. Ensure you pack plenty of snacks, drinks, and entertainment options, as onboard dining can be costly and shops may have limited selections. The communal baths on the ferry could be a fun experience for older children, but check age restrictions and suitability beforehand. Reddit

Consider booking a family-friendly cabin if available, offering more space and privacy than standard tourist class. The long ferry journeys can be an adventure in themselves, but keeping children engaged with books, games, or movies downloaded onto devices is crucial, given the unreliable Wi-Fi. The novelty of a large ferry can be exciting, but managing expectations about the journey's duration and the lack of immediate amenities upon arrival is key. Reddit

🚗 Road Trippers & Car Travelers

For those on a road trip, the Shin-Tomakomai East Port Ferry Terminal is a vital link for moving your vehicle between Hokkaido and mainland Japan. Booking your car space on the ferry well in advance is essential, especially during peak travel seasons. The boarding process is organized, with vehicles typically boarding after foot passengers. Reddit

Be aware that the terminal itself offers minimal services. It's crucial to fill up your gas tank and purchase any necessary supplies in larger towns like Tomakomai or Mukawa before heading to the terminal. The ferry journey provides a unique opportunity to rest your driving legs, enjoy the sea, and utilize onboard facilities like the baths. Remember to factor in the ferry travel time when planning your road trip itinerary. Reddit

💰 Budget Travelers

Traveling on a budget via Shin-Tomakomai East Port Ferry Terminal means prioritizing cost-effective choices. Opt for the most basic accommodation available on the ferry, such as tourist class berths, rather than private cabins. The biggest savings can be made by bringing your own food and beverages for the journey, as onboard dining is often expensive. Reddit

Look out for any off-season or early booking discounts that Shin Nihonkai Ferry might offer. While the terminal itself has few services, the cost of the ferry ticket is often competitive with other long-distance travel options when factoring in the convenience of bringing your vehicle. Be prepared for the lack of nearby amenities by stocking up on essentials beforehand, avoiding impulse purchases at the terminal or onboard. Reddit

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Navigating Ferry Travel in Hokkaido

Shin-Tomakomai East Port Ferry Terminal is a crucial gateway for travelers heading to and from Hokkaido, primarily serving routes operated by Shin Nihonkai Ferry. The terminal itself is located in Atsuma Town, a detail that often catches visitors off guard as it's a significant distance from the more commonly known Tomakomai West Port. This geographical distinction is vital for planning, as ferries to different destinations depart from each port. Reddit

Travelers often highlight the remote nature of the East Port terminal. Unlike bustling city ports, amenities are scarce. Shops and restaurants within the terminal building operate primarily based on ferry schedules, meaning they might be closed if your ferry is delayed or arrives at an odd hour. This necessitates a proactive approach: ensure you have all your food, drinks, and any last-minute souvenir needs sorted before arriving at the terminal. Reddit

For those embarking on longer journeys, such as the overnight trip to Tsuruga, booking accommodations like 'Tourist A' rooms or deluxe cabins well in advance is strongly advised, especially during peak seasons like Obon. Taking advantage of seasonal discounts can also make these longer voyages more affordable. Remember that onboard Wi-Fi and mobile reception can be unreliable, so downloading entertainment is a smart move for a comfortable journey. Reddit

Life Aboard the Shin Nihonkai Ferries

The ferries operating from Shin-Tomakomai East Port, such as the Suisen and Suzuran, offer a unique travel experience that blends transportation with a mini-cruise. These vessels are designed for long-haul journeys, providing passengers with amenities to make the trip more enjoyable. A standout feature for many is the large communal bath, often accompanied by a sauna, offering a relaxing way to unwind after a day of travel or before reaching your destination. Reddit

While the ferries are generally well-maintained, they are not always the newest vessels. For instance, the Yukari ferry was noted as being around 20 years old but in good condition. The onboard experience includes a mini-shop where you can purchase souvenirs, though the selection might be limited compared to the terminal shops. Dining options are available, but reviews suggest they can be on the expensive side, reinforcing the advice to bring your own provisions. Reddit

For travelers with vehicles, the boarding and disembarking process is organized, though the order can vary. The journey itself is often described as leisurely, allowing passengers to truly disconnect and enjoy the maritime environment. However, be prepared for potential seasickness on rougher days, and remember that digital connectivity can be intermittent throughout the voyage. Reddit
