Reviews Summary

Visitors generally praise Kyoto pottery workshops for their beginner-friendly nature and the patient, helpful staff. The hands-on experience of creating unique ceramic pieces is a major highlight, with many appreciating the quality of the finished products and the convenience of international shipping. However, some find the basic courses to be rushed and the additional shipping costs can make the overall experience feel expensive for the time spent. Reddit

"Went here with my wife and kid by booking a day before. Good thing there were 3 remaining slots left for the time we chose.

The experience was beginner-friendly and definitely enjoyable. My son who had tried pottery somewhere else (and did not enjoy it) was very engaged and wanted to make a lot more after the session. We were made to choose between cups, bowls, plates, etc.

The personnel were very friendly and patient with us. 1 person per student. They teach you how to give it the initial shape, then move onto the desired shape, then finally how to make minor tweaks to get the desired shape. It was 50 minutes well spent.

We opted to have our bowls delivered home after they bake and glaze them. Standard time given was 10 weeks. We just got them now via DHL - less than 10 weeks from the day we made them.

I must say, they came out great! Still debating if they'll be used or just sit as a display. 🤣

If time permits, we'll go again and make plates next time."

Vincent Ong

"I had a really good experience here! I did the Zuikou plan which lets you make 2 pieces and then they allow you to make a 3rd piece (for fun not to keep) on your own. The staff were very nice and helpful. When I wanted to record, they lent me their tripod to make sure I got a good video! Highly recommend!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Kintsugi

Kintsugi, meaning 'golden joinery,' is a traditional Japanese art form that repairs broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Instead of hiding the damage, Kintsugi highlights the cracks and repairs as part of the object's history, celebrating its imperfections and unique journey. Instagram

Participating in a Kintsugi workshop in Kyoto allows you to learn this philosophy firsthand. You'll typically choose a vintage Japanese pottery piece, often already broken, and then meticulously repair it using these ancient techniques. It's a deeply meditative and rewarding experience, resulting in a beautiful, one-of-a-kind piece of art that tells a story. Instagram

This practice aligns with the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, which finds beauty in imperfection and transience. It's a powerful reminder that breakage and repair are simply part of life, and can even lead to something more beautiful and resilient. Instagram

Crafting Your Own Matcha Bowl

Kyoto is renowned for its tea culture, and what better way to connect with it than by crafting your own matcha bowl? Many pottery workshops offer specialized sessions where you can learn to create this essential piece of Japanese tableware. Instagram

Using an electric pottery wheel, you'll be guided through the process of centering the clay, opening it up, and shaping it into a bowl. Instructors will help you achieve the desired form, thickness, and even add a spout if you wish, making it perfect for your home tea ceremonies. Instagram The clay used is often locally sourced, offering a unique texture and feel. Reddit

After shaping, your bowl will be fired, glazed in your chosen color (with beautiful matte finishes available), and then shipped to your home. This ensures you receive a functional and beautiful piece of art that you personally created, a truly special memento of your Kyoto trip. Instagram

The Zuikou Plan: A Comprehensive Pottery Experience

For those looking for a more involved pottery experience, the Zuikou plan is a popular choice. This option typically allows participants to create two pieces of pottery, giving you more creative freedom and time to perfect your craft. Reddit

A unique aspect of some Zuikou plans is the opportunity to make a third piece purely for fun, without the pressure of it being a keepsake. This allows for playful experimentation and a deeper exploration of the pottery wheel. Reddit The studio staff are known for being very helpful and encouraging, even lending tripods for those who want to document their creative process. Reddit

Once your pieces are complete, the studio handles all the subsequent steps: firing, glazing, and shipping them to your home. This comprehensive service means you can fully immerse yourself in the creative process, knowing that the final, beautiful results will be delivered to you weeks later. Instagram
