What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Fort Montego is a small historical site with cannons, offering some coastal views. While it holds historical significance, many visitors find it underwhelming due to its size and frequent locked state. The adjacent craft market provides souvenir shopping opportunities but can involve assertive vendors.
"Small locked up park at top of small hill. If you are looking for a fort, you will not find one. Its a few cannons on the top of a very small 1 maybe 2 story hill. It had a fence around it, and was locked. It really is not worth it, even if you are walking right by."

"It would be interesting if it would be open and if there were more information displays. The old canons look cool and give a nice vibe. But as already other reviewers said: It’s all locked up and the only open thing is the craft market nearby. The sellers there are pretty aggressive like a lot of the people in Montego Bay"

"One of the lost amazing views to wake up to in in a sunny day. Montego Bay has very lively hosts and very entertaining bus drivers. They not only tell you the story if the island but they enchant you with music and very funny jokes that make it a very worth of a ride. We got to see the compound where Bob Marley's foundation works from now and ride all the way up the mountain where you also have amazing views of the bay. Great for unusual shopping."

The History of Fort Montego
The fort's structure is described as polygonal, a traditional shape for fortifications of that era. While the main structure of the fort itself is minimal today, consisting of a few cannons and remnants of walls, its historical significance lies in its role during Jamaica's colonial period. The fort represents a tangible link to the island's past, reflecting its strategic importance and the labor that built its defenses.
Today, the fort is a small, often locked site. However, the nearby craft market is rumored to hold further remnants of the fort's past, including a well-preserved armory building. Exploring these adjacent areas can offer a more complete picture of the fort's original scope and function.
Navigating Montego Bay's Craft Markets
Many travelers advise that bargaining is expected and often necessary to get a fair price. It's recommended to have an idea of what you're willing to pay and to be polite but firm in your negotiations. Some visitors have noted that prices can be better here than at larger, more commercial craft fairs, especially if you engage with the vendors respectfully.
Beyond the immediate vicinity of Fort Montego, Montego Bay offers other shopping experiences. For instance, some tours might take you to areas with more extensive selections or different types of goods. However, the market near the fort provides a concentrated experience of local crafts and vendor interaction, which can be a memorable part of a visit.
Beyond the Fort: Montego Bay Excursions
Many visitors recommend exploring beyond the immediate tourist spots. Day trips to nearby Negril are a common choice for those looking for a change of scenery and famous beaches. For a more relaxed experience, consider a romantic dinner on the beach or exploring resorts that offer extensive amenities.
When planning your Montego Bay itinerary, consider booking tours that combine multiple activities or offer transportation to different attractions. This can help maximize your time and ensure a smoother experience, especially given the assertive nature of some local vendors.
