What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the San Giovanni Battista Church Massaquano as a wonderful and historic church, highlighting its unique facade and bell tower. The interior's artistic elements, including paintings and the statue of St. John the Baptist, are also frequently mentioned as beautiful aspects of this historic site.
"Located in the hamlet of Massaquano on a terrace reachable by a staircase, the church has a splendid and unique façade represented by its bell tower: the base has a pointed arch inside which a narthex is created on which the entrance opens, while the two upper levels, always with a square plan, have windows with stucco frames; the bell tower ends in a tympanum in which there is a clock [1].
Inside it is a Latin cross with a single nave with a barrel vault that hides the ancient cross vault: along the nave, decorated with canvases depicting Stories of the life of St. John the Baptist (of notable value by Giovanni Parlato) three blind arches house as many altars on each side. At the intersection of the transept with the nave rises the dome: with a hemispherical cap it rests on a drum with windows. In the past a balustrade divided the area of the high altar from the rest of the transept: this was eliminated and the resulting marble was used to create the pulpit[1]. In a niche on the high altar is housed the wooden statue of St. John the Baptist, the work of Carmine Lantriceni[2], while in the counter-façade is the choir with a pipe organ. The flooring is arranged in a checkerboard pattern where Carrara marble and African black marble alternate[1]."

Architectural Marvels
Internally, the church adopts a Latin cross layout with a single nave covered by a barrel vault, which cleverly conceals an older cross vault. Along the nave, blind arches on each side house altars, creating a sense of depth and devotion. The intersection of the transept and nave is crowned by a hemispherical dome resting on a drum with windows, adding to the spiritual ambiance. The flooring itself is a work of art, featuring a checkerboard pattern of Carrara and African black marble, a testament to the craftsmanship of the era.
Artistic Treasures Within
At the heart of the church, within a niche on the high altar, stands a wooden statue of St. John the Baptist. This sculpture is the work of Carmine Lantriceni and is a focal point for worshippers and visitors alike. Additionally, the counter-façade houses a choir with a pipe organ, contributing to the church's liturgical and acoustic richness. The historical marble from a former balustrade has been repurposed to create the church's pulpit, showcasing a thoughtful approach to preserving and reusing valuable materials.
