What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the papier-mâché floats at the Cittadella del Carnevale truly impressive and a testament to incredible artistry. However, current limited access to only one hangar and potential difficulties in reaching the location can detract from the overall experience, making it feel somewhat deserted at times.
"Firstly despite google maps saying you can walk there. All their walking directions take you into major roads which have no footpaths or specifically state no pedestrians. There is a path on the right hand side of the river that takes you through the back of a supermarket and you can access it that way. I have added a screenshot from google maps with a redline showing the path on the right hand side next to the river that is walkable.
However, it must be said that whilst the actual exhibits are impressive currently only hanger 16 is open. You can easily see all of them in 15 -20 mins. You have to ask to go into it as it is lock.
The ticket office is currently at the back next to the bistro. Tickets were €5 for an adult.
The cafe wasn't open till the afternoon in fact it felt like going round a deserted theme park.
Overall given the problems we had trying to walk to it and the limited access I was in general unimpressed. Maybe once it is all open again it may be worth the visit but at the moment I couldn't recommend it."

"Tickets for ages 12 and up cost €5 for the first floor and a hangar where you can see some of the floats. Truly beautiful. My only complaint is that access to more hangars could be provided to see more floats, perhaps even how they're made. Overall, it's very beautiful; perhaps it's even more impressive during Carnival."

The Carnival Citadel is a fascinating and unique place, where you can discover the behind-the-scenes of one of Italy's most famous events. The atmosphere is magical: the gigantic allegorical floats take shape before visitors' eyes, revealing the incredible work of artists and artisans.
It's also very interesting for children and for those who want to learn the history and secrets of Viareggio's traditions. A well-organized and colorful structure, steeped in art and creativity.
A place worth visiting at least once, especially if you love Carnival or the art of large-scale papier-mâché."
