What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are deeply impressed by the privilege of seeing priceless manuscripts like the Codex Vercellensis and the Vercelli Book, often during intimate, curator-led visits. The historical significance and artistic value are highlighted as major draws, though it's noted that these treasures are surprisingly little-known within Italy. Advance booking is crucial for the best experience.
"Yesterday we had the privilege and fortune of being able to admire the invaluable CODEX VERCELLENSIS in person during a private visit. There were just the four of us around the table with the excellent curator. I warmly invite everyone to see it and hear the story of this manuscript from the year 345 AD.
It is known as Codex A and is believed to be the first manuscript of the ancient Latin Gospel. It is on parchment and contains the writings of all four apostolic gospels. It was believed to have been written at the behest of Bishop Eusebius, whose relic it became after surviving many tragic events. It is a true treasure of faith and art that, unfortunately, is still little known to us Italians, while many foreigners come to see it.
I highly recommend a visit to this unique and priceless Codex, which has a fascinating history spanning some 1,800 years. One of Italy's many treasures.
In addition to Codex A, we also admired the VERCELLI BOOK, another historical gem: the book that no one knew how to read, the unknown book, written in the 10th century in Old Anglo-Saxon. It contains religious prose and verses and is considered one of the oldest English writings.
You can't If you don't want to miss these two unique and precious works, remember to book your visit. Yesterday we made history."
