Reviews Summary

Isola di San Servolo is praised for its unique historical museum and peaceful, romantic atmosphere, offering a tranquil escape from Venice's bustle. While the hotel is considered decent and the views are beautiful, some find the Vaporetto schedules inconvenient and dining options limited.

"Absolutely magnificent hidden gem, literally felt abandoned when we were wandering in the park, this closed psychiatry is beautiful and worth a visit, the “insane asylum” museum is also great and shows the history of this place as well as some of the atrocities commited.

My only problem is that the museum and the whole “insane asylum” is somewhat second priority - its somewhat not the main thing of this island now as it turned into a conference/study complex and features some other random exhibits and etc.? In my opinion i feel that such a place should absolutely be more worked on and turned into a full fledged experince of what an insane asylum used to be - keep the original room plans, let us see how they lived, where they ate, what they did, the rooms where they were tortured and etc. To not wash away the history so we dont repeat it again. Now the museum is in the corner, the mentioning of the place being an “insane asylum” is somewhat hidden and you see a restaurant, a hotel and etc. More than the fact that you are in an island dedicated as an “insane asylum”. I just wish they went all in with teaching history about such a place where huge things, positive and evil, happened. Instead its treated like a secondary treat. Non the less, the museum was still worth it."

"Venice the charming city attracting lot of people, it is an old town where you can enjoy 2 to 3 days walking and exploring the city in boat and by walk."

"A small island in Venice Lagoon.
The old asylum have been finely renovated and now is a place where university students take classes and several congresses are held.

Very interesting the museum.

The hotel is not the best in town but decent enough"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of San Servolo: From Asylum to Academia

Isola di San Servolo holds a fascinating and somber past. For centuries, it served as Venice's municipal asylum, housing individuals with mental health conditions. The island's isolation was seen as a way to manage and contain its residents, a practice common in historical mental healthcare. The Museum of the Asylum on the island meticulously preserves and presents this history, offering a poignant look at the lives of those who were confined there. Visitors can explore the former wards, treatment rooms, and personal belongings, gaining a deep understanding of the evolution of mental health treatment and societal attitudes.

Today, San Servolo has transformed into a vibrant center for learning and culture. It is home to the International University of Venice (IUAV), hosting students and researchers from around the globe. The island also serves as a venue for congresses, conferences, and cultural events, breathing new life into its historic structures. This dual identity – a place of historical reflection and a hub of modern academic pursuit – makes San Servolo a unique destination, offering a compelling narrative of transformation and resilience. The juxtaposition of its past and present is palpable as you wander its grounds. Reddit

Navigating Venice's Lagoon: The Vaporetto System

Getting to Isola di San Servolo is intrinsically linked to Venice's efficient, albeit sometimes complex, Vaporetto system. These public water buses are the lifeblood of transportation in the lagoon city, connecting the various islands and districts. For San Servolo, Line 20 is your primary route, typically departing from the Fondamente Nove stop on the northern edge of Venice's main island. It's crucial to understand that Vaporetto schedules are not as frequent as land-based buses and can change seasonally or due to special events. Always consult the ACTV (Azienda Veneziana della Mobilità) website or app for the most current timetables before you set out. Reddit

Planning your Vaporetto trips is key to a smooth experience. Missing the last boat back from San Servolo could leave you stranded, so pay close attention to the return times. Consider purchasing a day pass or multi-day pass if you plan on using the Vaporetto extensively for exploring Venice and its islands. These passes can offer significant savings compared to buying individual tickets. The journey itself offers lovely views of the lagoon, making it more than just a commute – it's part of the Venetian experience. Reddit
