Reviews Summary

Visitors praise San Nicolò dei Mendicoli as a serene, free-to-enter hidden gem in Venice's Dorsoduro district. Its historical significance, including a connection to the Pantheon, and its peaceful atmosphere are frequently highlighted as major draws, offering an authentic escape from tourist crowds.

"One of the most unusual and beautiful churches in Venice! Originally built in the 800's the current building dates from about 1100 to 1200 but has been"restored' several times. Well off the tourist path, you might be alone in this church!"

Richard Rosenbaum

"Although it's a bit off the beaten path in Dorsoduro, it's absolutely worth a visit because:

- It’s one of the oldest churches in Venice, with origins dating back to the 7th century (though the current structure is more recent).
- It has a long history of supporting the less fortunate. San Nicolò is the patron saint of sailors and fishermen, and the term Mendicoli (beggars) comes from the poor community that once lived in the area.
- In the Middle Ages, this community took on the name Nicolotti and became legendary rivals of the Castellani (wealthier workers at the Arsenal). Their fierce competitions culminated in epic fistfights on so-called "bridges of fists", like the nearby Ponte dei Pugni.
- Despite its modest facade, the interior is richly decorated. You'll find clerestory paintings, many from the Veronese school, and generous use of gold leaf, not just on picture frames but also on the arches of the stone columns. It’s a lavish display, especially remarkable considering the humble origins of the community that built it.

The entry is free."

"The first church of Venice, just the tower survived from the original building, but it still worth to see it. Beautiful ornaments and sculptures inside of the church."
