Giandomenico Tiepolo, the son of the more famous Giambattista Tiepolo, seamlessly blends 18th-century Venetians dressed in contemporary attire into these biblical scenes. Elegantly adorned ladies, turbaned Turks and even smirking children all observe Christ’s torment as He carries the cross, culminating in His triumphant leap from the tomb in the ceiling panel.
I'm speculating here, but what might have seemed irreverent to the church at the time, could have actually been an attempt to make the biblical story more relatable to contemporary worshippers, drawing a stronger connection between the sacred and the everyday."
