What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Ugento Archaeological Museum MUSe, calling it an excellent and professional local museum with incredibly well-done presentations and informative audiovisual displays. The discovery of hidden frescoes and significant Messapian artifacts are major highlights, making it a must-visit for history buffs. Some minor issues include Italian-only text on certain exhibits and a note about restroom supplies.
"Excellent local museum. Obviously, the collection is less notable than at a major museum, but there are really interesting frescoes that were hidden in the walls of the building, and some nice archaeological discoveries. Really, though, the presentation is so well done that a lot of major museums could come here and learn. Explanations everywhere, with genuinely informative audiovisual displays. English signs on almost everything and even an English option on the audiovisual displays. And really nice people at the front desk. One of the highlights of our trip to the area."

"Educational and fun museum to discover. The posters on the ground floor are in English and Italian. Those on the first floor are only in Italian, unfortunately. We would have liked to know more about the objects on the 1st floor. It was fun to discover, behind a wall, another ancient mural.
There was no toilet paper in any restrooms.
Make sure you pay the right price at the entrance because they tried to charge me almost 10 euros extra."

The Messapian Legacy
Beyond the Messapian period, the museum also showcases other archaeological finds that shed light on Ugento's long and layered history. Visitors often highlight the interactive audiovisual displays as a key feature that enhances engagement and understanding, bringing the past to life in a dynamic way.
One of the most surprising and delightful aspects of the museum is the discovery of ancient frescoes hidden within the very walls of the building. Museum Presentation and Visitor Experience
Despite the high quality of presentation, there are minor points of feedback. While the ground floor posters are bilingual (English and Italian), some visitors noted that the first-floor explanations were exclusively in Italian. The overall visitor experience is overwhelmingly positive, with many describing it as educational and fun. The staff at the front desk are often mentioned as being particularly nice, adding to the welcoming atmosphere. The museum's ability to present its collection in a way that is both informative and engaging makes it a highlight for many trips to the Salento region.
