What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Cattedrale di San Giacomo to be a modest yet historically significant site in Tuscania. While the exterior is simple, the interior holds notable 15th-century relief panels and a 14th-century polyptych, though some reviews mention display and lighting issues. The 'Fontana Grande' outside is a pleasant addition.
"The eighteenth-century cathedral perhaps suffers somewhat from its proximity to masterpieces like St. Peter's Basilica. Modest on the outside, traditional on the inside, white and gold, which, in my personal taste, are not at all noteworthy. One of the side aisles houses two beautifully crafted reliquaries, while a permanent nativity scene is always open to visitors. The most beautiful items, in my opinion, namely six 15th-century relief panels and several paintings, including a 14th-century polyptych, are kept in a corner at the end of the right aisle. Even the chapel containing the polyptych, and other paintings of undeniable interest, is unlit, with the paintings piled up haphazardly. A great shame. As in all churches still in use, chairs are piled up and lecterns placed randomly (in front of the marble panels, as seen in the photo), which demonstrates a complete lack of attention to beauty. A shame."

"The ancient church of San Giacomo, located in the historic center of Tuscania (VT), was completely rebuilt between 1566 and 1572 at the behest of the new bishop Giovan Francesco Gambara and has undergone numerous restorations over the centuries. The façade is very simple with three portals and is embellished by the beautiful 'Fontana Grande' (Great Fountain) in front of its churchyard."
